Health checkup and measurements of Maynas 📏🩺

We are planning on moving Maynas to a new and bigger pool soon. Recently, our head vet Remi led our vet students in a basic health checkup and took his measurements.

Maynas is over 10 years old, and is the smallest known adult manatee in the world. Unfortunately, he’s a dwarf subspecies that cannot be released. We do our best to provide him the best quality of life possible at RAREC!

Have you seen an adult manatee of this size before?

Education and community outreach are key elements of our mission at RAREC. With our weekly domestic campaigns, we’re not only helping improve the welfare of animals, but also providing local communities with the opportunity to learn about veterinary care 🐾

A special thank you to @felineconservation for supporting our domestic campaign efforts!

Health checkup for Chimi the Tayra 🩺

Chimi has been at RAREC since being rescued in January. As we continue to work toward a release plan, our vets performed a routine health exam to assess her overall health and wellbeing. Everything went well, and we will continue testing Chimi with live-feedings and improving her enclosure as we prepare for her eventual release.

We would like to thank the Nashville Zoo, Zoo World, and the Herb and Bui Foundation for their continued support of our veterinary program! @nashvillezoo @zooworldpcb @angelswingsfoundation

Measurements & health checkup for the tapir ✅

After 3 months of residence at RAREC, our team performed a health checkup and took body measurements of the tapir. She was brought to us with bullet wounds to her face after her mother was killed by hunters, which led to disfigurement and some difficulty eating. Now, all signs are positive as she continues to recover well from her injuries.

This is an example of the hands-on experiences available to our veterinary students at RAREC. We believe that education is key to helping foster the next generation of conservationists.

A special thank you to @wildlifeworldzoo for funding the construction of a new enclosure for our tapir! We look forward to seeing her roam a larger space in the near future.

Some fun outdoor pictures from class work to weekend trips. I tried making the most out of the semester getting outside, fishing for class, research in freezing conditions (a crisp Florida 40-50 I promise it’s cold) to visiting some beautiful springs!

Not only this semester did I have my own research project, but I also took a marine ecology class where we designed experiments using BRUVs (Baited remote underwater videos). Our group compared zooplankton and nekton populations based on light type and color. Although this was a lot to do in one semester designing, preforming, presenting and writing a paper, it was a lot of fun and a great learning experience. I couldn’t have done it without my amazing group!!
