Everyone meet Sam, team lead of High-Volatge for BYU Racing!

I am an electrical engineering major at BYU! Ever since I was a little kid, I was fascinated with computers and tech gadgets, and so it only made sense to follow that to a degree and turn it into a career. With that said, I had always struggled to pick out the exact industry where I wanted to end up to apply my understanding of electrical and computer systems. It wasn't until a couple of years ago that I really started to look at the automotive industry. I didn't grow up racing or working on cars, so it came as a massive surprise when I noticed that I became deeply interested in cars. Something about the engineering (especially the competitive aspect of it when it comes to racing like in Formula-style racing) just piqued my interest. At this point, I wondered if I was in the right major or if I should switch to something more in line with the current market, like mechanical engineering, but then I realized there was huge potential in electric vehicles.

It was the greatest of coincidences that I had this epiphany around the same time I noticed something called "BYU Formula E" posted online. I hopped on board and decided to take on the role of "High Voltage team lead" (in charge of powering the car with an efficient battery and a powerful motor) since, at the time, there were only a handful of consistent members. I am only a sophomore in the electrical engineering program with a lot that to learn, but words cannot describe how grateful I am for the position I am in to learn more about not just EVs but how to work in a team and conquer tasks that seem like an impossible beast.

Being a part of BYU Racing has been an absolute dream for me. Setting and achieving goals are skills that I really want to sharpen, and I hope to achieve that with my time on the team. I also hope to become an engineer that will be highly-marketable and one that thrives in team environments.
