✨ Marjane Satrapi
✨ Author of Persepolis

Scintillating and risque in theme, humorous in tone, and engrossing in style, Embroideries from Marjane Satrapi can easily be ranked as one of my top reads for January 2021. This being my first Satrapi work, I was not sure if I'd like it, although her critically acclaimed memoir, Persepolis, did conjure high expectations for me. And surely Satrapi lives up to all the hype!

Enveloped in a drowsy afternoon, the Iranian women in Embroideries partake in juicy gossips and sharing of secrets about sex, virginity, and the vagaries of men, all over tea. Common perception might dictate conservative, prudish, and demure women in such traditional societies (India being one of them), but this novella is a punch in the gut that talks about the sexual desires and freedom that women rightfully deserve and revel in. The characters are bold, humorous, and daring in their pursuit of pleasure - and I loved how none of the women had any qualms about it!

The story also talks of the frivolous pride society takes in the virginity of women and the extent some have to go to abide by this expectation of the society - it will absolutely enrage you, but how Satrapi tackles such a grim topic, will surely bring a crooked smile to your face. You'll also find why this one's titled Embroideries! 😏

Read in one brisk go, I found it quite entertaining and now I'm sitting here drawing parallels with Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows (which I recently finished) and the Indian film, Lipstick Under My Burkha! These are tales of feminism that normalise female desire and open larger dialogues about liberation for women in every sense of the word. 10/10 would recommend! ✨
