POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

It’s my absolute pleasure to share that Brave Rebel Army won the Best Music Award at Sick Chick Flicks Film Festival in North Carolina last weekend.

Bravo to Composer Janal Bechthold for her suspenseful and evocative score, and bravo to Music Supervisor Mikaila Simmons, of Roly Poly Music, who curated our film’s killer soundtrack.

The story behind the music of this film is winding and serendipitous. I had the good fortune to meet Janal at St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival in 2017. I was about to embark on making Brave Little Army - which became our first collaboration. I was also lucky enough to meet Mikaila at @sjiwff in 2023 when I was deep in post on Brave Rebel Army. In the months that followed, while I was laid up with a broken humerus, I spent countless hours listening to potential tracks and collaborated remotely with Mikaila and Janal on how to best tell the story - set in 1994 with no scripted dialogue - through music. When Mikaila suggested Rugged Operator by Hip Club Groove, Cory Bowles’ hip hop band from the 90s, it felt like kismet - I’d met Cory at a Kingston Canadian Film Festival party in 2018 when I was in pre-production on Brave Little Army, and he was kind and encouraging back then (and now very generous in letting us license this perfect song). Then I discovered the lovely, dulcet tones of Far Away, by STACEY, on YouTube (in a music video produced by the wonderful Lora Campbell - another gem I met at @sjiwff).

Everything fell magically into place after that.

I love that, thanks to Mikaila, we have two original Canadian tunes on our soundtrack. I love Janal’s talent for weaving her score seamlessly with songs to stir just the right emotion. I love how all the music of our film is layered so thoughtfully and beautifully with Daniela Pinto’s masterful and eclectic sound design.

Thank you to the @sickchickflicks jury for recognizing Brave Rebel Army’s music and all the talented artists who made it happen.

Many thanks to @canada.council and @ontarioartscouncil for the funds to pay all our artists for their work.

Thank you to the jury for the honour, and to Executive Director @sibylsantiago and the entire festival team of staff and volunteers for working tirelessly to put on such an outstanding fest. We were thrilled to be included, and it means so much to be nominated amongst so many incredible films.

Congratulations to our talented cast and crew, and to all our fellow nominees.

Big thanks to @winnipegfilm for your support, and to @canada.council and @ontarioartscouncil and all of our kind donors. It wouldn’t be possible to tell this story and share it with audiences at such an important time, without you.

Would it be a festival run if we didn’t return to the Land of the Brave? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Fortunately, @thehbfilmfest agrees and has graciously selected Brave Rebel Army for their upcoming edition Oct. 1-4 in the heart of Paisley. So stoked to bring part two of our trilogy to this lovely, lively festival four years later. Tapadh leibh to festival director @hewittgpro and the HB crew for including us! 💙

Bravo to our talented Team BRA, and a world of thanks to @winnipegfilm @canada.council & @ontarioartscouncil.

A full circle moment x 2! 💫

Brave Rebel Army is a proud official selection of the 18th edition of @ladyfilmmakers in Beverly Hills. It’s incredibly special to return to this beautiful festival for a third time (Brave Little Army had the good fortune to win a Jury Award there in 2019, and the script for Brave Rebel Army was a semi finalist in their 2021 short screenplay competition).

So grateful for the support of the entire Lady Filmmakers team, for our distributor @winnipegfilm, and our generous funders @canada.council & @ontarioartscouncil.

Congratulations to every member of our team, and many thanks to our kind donors.💗

Brave Rebel Army starts off the Ladies
Kick Butt Program 7 on Friday, September 25th at 8:15 pm at the Fine Arts Theatre (8556 Wiltshire Blvd). Link to tickets in bio. LA friends come thru! 🌴

In June 2023, the weekend we were on set shooting Brave Rebel Army, its prequel Brave Little Army was screening in Alberta at @okotoksfilmfestival. So it’s a really sweet feeling to be selected to screen part two at the 10th edition of this very cool, filmmaker-forward and community building festival. Thank you to festival director Katie Fournell and team for inviting us back, to our distributor @winnipegfilm, and to @canada.council and @ontarioartscouncil. 💫

Congratulations to our cast & crew - so grateful for all you have done to honour this story. ✨
