POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
At the height of the ICE raids last summer, Abel told us he was leaving Los Angeles for Mexico City. We’d come to know him over the years as Jamie and Brian’s barber. Sitting in his chair, they learned he’d been brought to the US at two months old and had spent his entire life undocumented in LA. A criminal conviction at 19 had made him ineligible for DACA.

Because I’m nosy and annoying, I’d often tag along to Jamie’s haircuts - drinking Diet Coke while we talked and gossiped with Abel. We’d trade stories about his childhood in Highland Park and our own complicity in the neighborhood’s gentrification. When Abel cut Jamie’s hair for our wedding, he asked what Mexico City was like. He told us he dreamed of seeing the world, and that he was tired of feeling like his life was being shaped by people who didn’t know or care about him.

When he told us he was leaving, I asked if we could film and told him to think about it. He called the next day and said he wanted to remember what it felt like to leave the only place he’d never known. The short we made follows Abel through his final week in Los Angeles: saying goodbye to his family, his clients, and a city that never fully loved him back.

@abel_son , thank you for trusting us, for letting us film, and for sharing your story. I know you don’t think of yourself as brave, but I do. You’ve shown us what it means to refuse to be defined by your past, to reclaim your agency, and to turn anger into something that looks a lot like courage. ❤️

Now on the @guardian , with a beautiful article by Ed Pilkington and photographs by yours truly. Link in bio.
