A screening so good, it could change a life.

Thank you to every incredible woman who dressed up and joined us for our private screening of The Devil Wears Prada 2. More than 110 women came together to honour Afroz and help shine a light on the importance of recognising the symptoms of bowel cancer.

An evening filled with laughter, fashion, connection, and meaningful conversations about Bowel.

Shout out to the wonderful @julesrobinson82 who ensured she could attend the night to support our cause and yes she was the amazing surprise on the night our guests were not expecting. Thank you so much Jules 🫶🏼

Meet the wonderful Samantha, our bowel cancer warrior. Samantha will be part of our panel discussion at our Spring Luncheon.

At 31 years old, she works in the children’s team at a public library, a role that she truly loves. Samantha was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer at the age of 28. By the time it was discovered, the cancer had already spread to her liver and lungs. Initially, surgery was not an option, so she began chemotherapy right away.

Last year, Samantha finally received the green light for surgery. She underwent a high anterior resection along with two liver resections. Unfortunately, not all of the cancer was removed, and she had to resume chemotherapy. More recently, she learned that the cancer has spread to her peritoneum, and she is now exploring her available treatment options.

Despite having undergone nearly 50 cycles of chemotherapy, Samantha says she still doesn’t feel like she has cancer, and that she recognises how fortunate she is to be able to say that two and a half years into her journey. She remains endlessly hopeful and optimistic, and is determined to keep that spirit alive.

Such an inspiration. We adore Samantha. Our warrior.

• episode 4 is live (link in bio) and I’m really excited about this one! I talk through my recent scan results and some potential treatment options, as well as some books that I’ve been reading (of course!).

I also spend a lot of time talking through the power of Jesus’ death and resurrection. Easter is such a sacred and holy time of year and it means so much to me. Without Jesus’ resurrection, our faith is futile. In John’s gospel, he mentions that Mary mistook Jesus for the gardener. I spend time unpacking what that means and how it connects to the creation story in Genesis. Jesus is our faithful gardener, and He can be trusted to tend to our gardens so carefully 🌸🌻🌺🌼

Meet Samantha Age: 29 Location: Sydney, Australia. Diagnosis: Stage 4 Colorectal Cancer.

I met the gorgeous @samindigo through @cancerchicksau. Since then, we have continued to stay in touch. Make sure to check out @cancerchicksau. The connections I have made through this incredible charity have been second to none.

This is Samantha’s story:

My cancer was discovered through a CT scan. I had severe fatigue and assumed I was anaemic, so I had a blood test done. This showed that my liver enzymes were elevated and that prompted further scans which led to finding the primary tumour and metastatic disease in my liver and right lung. A few years prior I did have blood in my stool (that ended up going away, so I didn’t think anything of it), as well as changes in bowel habits and bloating.

My overall journey hasn’t been too horrific, which I’m thankful for. The scariest part so far was having a bowel obstruction back in January 2024. That was absolutely horrendous and terrifying. We ended up putting a stent in my bowel and thankfully I haven’t had any further problems. I’m on chemo for life at this point, so I go in every 2 weeks to receive treatment. I’m glad to say that things are going well! I’m able to handle the treatments well and have continued to have a good response so far, with my tumours shrinking along the way.

I have had so much support and for that I am truly so thankful! My family and friends are incredible, my oncologist is amazing, my church community has been brilliant, and I also see a therapist who specialises in seeing cancer patients which has been so helpful. I’m also a part of a charity called Cancer Chicks. Their support has been wonderful, and it’s been so beautiful to connect with other incredible girls who have also faced a hard diagnosis. Chatting to people who just get it has been amazing.

I just recently completed my 25th round of chemo! If you had told me I would be doing so well after at this point in my journey, I’m not sure I would believe you. I’m so thankful for every day that I wake up well and with air in my lungs!

💰Your finances might not be your first priority when diagnosed with #cancer, but for those living with it, the cost of the disease can add up quickly. The cost of the treatment itself is only the tip of the iceberg, and the underlying expenses can be quite unexpected—often coming out of nowhere. These can be especially difficult to pay if you are a younger patient, do not have income insurance, savings or a generous support network.

🌻 Meet Samantha @samindigo : a vibrant 28-year-old whose life took an unexpected turn upon receiving the devastating news of a stage four colorectal cancer diagnosis. What began as seemingly routine symptoms—blood in her stools and persistent fatigue—soon led to a whirlwind of medical appointments and tests, culminating in a prognosis that shook her to her core: she may only have another three years left.

“The main thought that was running through my mind was how? How was this possible? I ate well, was fit, was very conscious about what things can increase your risk of cancer—and I would avoid those—and I didn’t have a family history of colorectal cancer,” Samantha recalls, reflecting on the disbelief that accompanied her diagnosis.

“It was all so out of the blue. I thought about my life and all the things I wanted to experience — like getting married and having a family... I felt like they were just completely ripped away from me. I assumed I was fit and healthy because I felt like I was.”

💪The initial shock of her diagnosis sent Samantha spiralling into a world of fear and uncertainty. As she grappled with the stark reality of her prognosis, she found herself confronting a myriad of emotions—fear, anger, sadness—yet amidst the turmoil, she discovered a tenacity to fight for her life. “I genuinely thought I was about to die.”

💩 Possessing a positive, hopeful spirit, Sam not only navigates her own diagnosis day-by-day, but advocates fiercely for herself and others. “If I had felt more comfortable talking about my bowel habits a few years ago, I’d be in a much better position now. There needs to be less taboo about poo!” She hopes to destigmatize discussions surrounding bowel health, urging others to listen to their bodies and seek help when needed.
