$In Juba, South Sudan, a simple daily routine has transformed from a community-building tradition into a modern crisis. Lawrence Samuel recalls when families gathered at the Nile River to collect water together, sharing laughs and helping neighbors. Today, rapid population growth and a lack of a central distribution system mean the municipal network only reaches a fraction of the city. Now, big blue water tankers fill the streets are serving as a symbol of both survival and a broken system. Compounding the issue, local water station manager Edward Nagbong notes that only about 10% of those transporting water are South Sudanese, highlighting a steep challenge in national self-reliance. Sustainable development isn’t just about laying pipes; it is about restoring the dignity of public spaces, rebuilding community trust, and fostering local economic ownership.
