2192 days ago, I met the man of my dreams…in a Darth Vader poncho while he carried me up the stairs in the snow (trick-or-treat). Still, there hasn’t been a day that’s gone by that he hasn't put this smile on my face, even through some of the worst times that most couples won’t face in a lifetime.

Sammy, I don’t know how I got so lucky to meet you and not only fall in love but learn what TRUE love is. Thank you for your steadiness during the storms, the laughter and the joy you bring into this household, being a protector when you were not even realizing you were teaching me how to stand up for myself, and just being the amazing partner, father, friend, and man you are. Happy six years! I love you grossly😘🤢❤️

More than 5.4 million Americans live with paralysis, nearly 1 in 50 people. Every year, another 17,000 lives are changed by spinal cord injuries. Yet too often, paralysis is overlooked, underestimated, or misunderstood.

Spinal cord injuries do not always look the same. Some of us roll into rooms in chairs or use other adaptive devices, “inspiring” others simply for surviving in a world that remains largely inaccessible. Others can appear almost unnoticeable. But all of us live with symptoms that cannot be seen: nerve pain, autonomic dysregulation, weakness, spasms, loss of sensation, fatigue, and more. These invisible challenges are just as real, even when they remain hidden from view and too often out of shame.

I never wanted this accident. But I am grateful for the lessons it forced on me, including resilience, patience, advocacy, and compassion. Lessons that rippled outward to everyone around me, especially my son.

Living with paralysis takes a village of family, friends, caregivers, and community who show up in ways big and small. Their support keeps me rolling and reminds me that strength is never built in isolation. My gratitude for each and every one of you is endless.

This month, I honor a silent minority. The millions navigating life with spinal cord injuries. The millions whose strength is not a choice but a necessity. ♿💛🙏🏼
