12 yrs in vocational ministry 😌

Not totally sure why they let me onto the team at my first church on September 3, 2014 as an arrogant & cranky 21 year old... but I sure am glad that they did.

After a little over 9 years on staff at Fellowship, 9 glorious months in camp ministry, and now 2 years (today!) at New Life, I’m feeling humbled & grateful & expectant & hopeful.

12 years is nothing compared to the saints I admire.
I hope to someday celebrate 50.

But I’ve learned some things. Here’s a few:

There is always someone who’s an expert in what you’re doing. Find them, ask a million questions, learn everything you can. Even if things are going well, keep learning.

If you’re unable to receive feedback & unwilling to seek it out — even from people who care deeply for you — you do not belong in leadership.

No chairs, no platform. If you lack the willingness to do the mundane, least sexy, most invisible work of your ministry (be that stacking chairs or otherwise), your character is not ready for the exposure of the public cool stuff.

Ministries grow at the speed of relationships and relationships happen one conversation at a time. Learn to communicate clearly, consistently, with grace. If you don’t, your relationships won’t grow and neither will your ministry.

Find someone ahead of you to learn from and find someone behind you to bring along. You’re standing on someone’s shoulders; who’s standing on yours?

You don’t owe everyone an all-access pass to every area of your life. But you need a few people who DO get an all-access pass. Practice bearing all with them before the stakes get high.

If you’re not willing to give your best to 10 people, you’re not ready to give your best to 1,000 (let alone 10,000).

To wrap this up, my biggest and most sincere THANK YOU to the pastors, professors, mentors, supervisors, therapists, volunteers, interns, friends, family, and spouse (love you T!) that have held me up & held me together for the last 12 years. My faithfulness is only possible because of yours.

To the next 12 & beyond 🧡
