The girl who claims she hates running somehow ended up doing 41.47km 😂

One of the performers I work with wanted to complete a marathon distance and I said I’d join him, as any sane physio would in support of his goal. 🤪

Important context: I hadn’t run since my half marathon in July. I haven’t been strength training consistently. And I had absolutely no attachment to finishing a marathon. That was his goal, not mine.

Around 14km I fell behind, and by 15km I was mentally in the bin.

So I stopped thinking about how far there was left to go.

I let go of the expectation of what the day was supposed to look like and started paying attention to what was actually happening.

The sun was shining. The trail was beautiful. My body was still moving. So I kept going.

And somewhere along the way, I realised I needed this mentally far more than I needed it physically.

I’ve been navigating a lot of anxiety and stress around my career recently. This didn’t fix any of that, but for 5 hours and 43 minutes my only job was to keep putting one foot in front of the other.

There’s something incredibly freeing about that.

And yes, I hadn’t trained specifically to run 41km.

But my body wasn’t untrained.

There are years of strength training, gymnastics, dancing, running and conditioning in this body. Years spent building capacity.

And that’s something I talk about all the time as a coach.

Training isn’t just about what you can lift today, how fast you can run, or fixing the latest thing that hurts.

You’re building capacity.

You’re giving your body more options for the things life might ask of it, including, apparently, a random 41km trail run 😂

There were definitely gaps that showed up too. My hips and pelvis reminded me pretty quickly that I’ve neglected my strength training recently.

But maybe that’s part of the point.

We don’t need perfectly optimised bodies before we’re allowed to use them.

We can appreciate what we’ve already built, notice where the gaps are, and keep building from there.

41.47km. 5:43.

Not quite a marathon.

Didn’t really care.

But a pretty big reminder of what we’re capable of, physically and mentally.

I very nearly didn’t go to drama school.

Some of you may know that I was originally meant to study Biological Sciences at either York or Warwick. Instead, I decided to make the very risky decision to change my mind and apply for a drama school, which I happened to get into.

Throughout my three years at ArtsEd, my main note was to “take up space!”. You’d think it was easy being 6’9” but for some reason, I could never fully let myself do it.

Because of that, The Strongman was a very difficult character for me to grasp at first. He is a charismatic, confident man who unapologetically takes up space. He is a man of very few words, but once you get him going, it’s hard for him to stop. He soaks up the attention, knows people are watching, and remains unchanged by outside opinions. He understands his strength, but chooses to be gentle. He is calm, thoughtful, and shows up no matter how he’s feeling inside. He gives people space to interact, and while it may go a bit far at times, he never cuts it short. He lets people in, even when everything tells him not to.

I’m very proud to say that I am becoming that man.

This job and year have changed me in ways I never thought it could, taught me things I didn’t know I needed to learn, and introduced me to people I will always be grateful to know.

I am going to miss doing this show with these incredibly talented people.

Thank you, it has been an absolute pleasure.

Let’s see what happens next xx ☺️
