Dear World,

I am going to be the next victim of drowning, even though I am not aware of it.

I live in a world where water is both beautiful and dangerous, and I don’t fully understand the risks that surround me.

I don’t have the answers, but I do know that something is clearly broken. How many people must die from something so preventable before we change the status quo?

Every day, many of us enjoy time near water by swimming, playing, or simply having fun, without realising the hidden dangers. Many of us in different parts of the world also have to live near bodies of water, use it as a means of transport, and rely on it for other resources, and don’t really have much of a choice.

Today, I am preparing myself to be the next star of the moment as we head towards the brief news story about my drowning. Depending on which part of the world I am from, I may be fortunate or unfortunate to make it to the news, as some of us just don’t come home. Some of our loved ones have closure, while others are left searching for answers.

Why do so many of us need to go this way? Why can't we live in a world where no one has to suffer the fate of something that can be so easily prevented? I dream of a future where families aren’t torn apart by preventable drownings, where every life is valued and protected.

Maybe one day. But until then... 😢
