#tonganlanguageweek 🇹🇴 This one was a little bittersweet for me this year without my dad. YAHHH while my vocabulary can definitely use some work, I’m fluent enough to know when I’m in trouble (lol doesn’t happen often tho!!!) I still feel so close to him when I hear Tongan conversations, prayers, hymns. Since I was a little girl, he would sit with me to practice my pronunciation and help me understand my lēsoni for Fakamē. Sometimes being the half Tongan kid was a little scary 🤣🤣 But he always made me feel confident and brave to stand up there. He’d also go over his own malangas with us so that we’d know what he was preaching, esp those NYE ones iykyk!! Every time I did my tau’olunga, he would tell me how proud he was and how beautifully I had done. As I got older, I went to any event he asked me to so that I could dance to represent our family and his roots in Kolomotu’a. My dad had so much pride and respect for his island, and I’m so grateful that part of me belongs to such a rich culture. Until his last breath, he was surrounded by his village and voices that sang and prayed in his language.

I looked back at our texts over the last few years, and I asked him so many random questions in Tongan. I know he was sick of me hahaha BUT I also know how happy it made him. This journey without him has been filled with a lot of pain and sorrow, but looking at all these pictures makes me smile & feel a bit more peace, love & gratitude. Ofa Lahi Atu Dad 🤍

I stripped down in my basement in New Jersey to make a few acoustic versions of songs but it ended up being the first thing I’ve ever made that I fully love from start to finish and completely changed the way I want to record my shit. It’s also the first thing I mixed myself so it’s as accurate to what I wanted it to sound like as possible. You will hear pipes with water flushing through them, water heaters turning on, my damn necklace jingle janglin around, Bowie barking and many other sounds that I hope you find as pleasing as I do. “Garden State Vampire - Stripped” out now.
