Benchmark 29 Update! After another round of board sanding today and a final application of filler putty to address the remaining low spots, we’re getting closer to having the bottom of the 29 exactly where we want it. With the fairing work nearly complete, we finally started moving in the right direction and began cutting fiberglass for the first layers of our hull layup. With a substantial layup schedule ahead of us, we’re taking our time to make sure every piece is cut, fitted, and organized before we start mixing epoxy resin. The goal is to have everything ready to go so we can focus entirely on laminating without having to stop and make additional cuts. Tomorrow, we’ll finish sanding the last areas of filler putty and begin prepping the bottom of the hull for its first layers of fiberglass. We’re getting closer to a major milestone on the 29, and it’s exciting to see all the prep work finally coming together!

Benchmark 29 Update! With all of our filler pieces fully cured overnight, we hit the ground running today and kicked things off with a sanding party! We started by shaping the bow and transom before moving on to board sanding the entire bottom of the boat, knocking down high spots and smoothing out all the seams. Once everything was sanded, we went back through and addressed the low spots, filling them in so we can come back tomorrow and board sand everything flat, fair, and square. Once we have the bottom dialed in exactly where we want it, we’ll move on to rounding over the bow and transom and begin cutting fiberglass in preparation for laminating the entire bottom of the boat! We’re getting closer and closer to having the bottom completely glassed, and once that’s finished, we can finally start installing the sides of the Benchmark 29.

Benchmark 29 Update! Today we finally started moving forward with gluing more material onto the hull! First, we started by tacking every bottom panel into place from the underside of the bulkheads. Even though the bottom panels are already glued down, we like to keep everything tacked in place until the fiberglass is laid up to ensure everything stays tight and secure. Once everything was tacked in place, it was finally time to remove all the washers and screws from the bottom and start making some progress toward getting the hull ready for glass. Starting at the bow, we mocked up a piece of 1” Divinycell before ripping down two 1” x 1” strips to fill the void where the port and starboard bottom panels meet at the keel. After getting everything fitted and glued into place, we used shrink-wrap string to help hold the shape while the epoxy cures. Moving to the transom, we followed a similar process, ripping down a 1” x 1” strip of Coosa to fill the remaining void. Once everything was fitted, we glued and screwed it into position and will let it cure overnight. Tomorrow, we’ll remove the remaining screws and begin rounding off the transom, shaping the keel, and cleaning up the bottom of the hull in preparation for fiberglass. We’re getting closer to cutting and laying our first layers of glass on the bottom of the Benchmark 29!!

Benchmark 29 Update! After getting all 14 bottom panels cut, fitted, and temporarily installed, it was time to pull them all back off and get them permanently bonded into place! We started by removing all 14 sheets from the jig, prepping our bonding surfaces, and mixing up our thickened epoxy. From there, it was a repetitive process of applying epoxy, laying each panel back into position, and screwing it down to ensure a strong, consistent bond to the stringers and transom bracket. 14 panels and 8 hours later, we officially have the entire bottom of the Benchmark 29 glued and screwed into place! Now we’ll let everything cure overnight before getting back after it tomorrow. Our next step is to toenail the panels into place from the underside of the jig, securing everything before we begin shaping and fairing the bottom. Once that’s complete, we’ll be one major step closer to laying down our first layers of fiberglass!

Benchmark 29 Update: Tacking the Bottom Into Place! Today was a huge milestone for us on the Benchmark 29 plug! After getting our chines glued into place yesterday, we hit the ground running today and were able to cut, fit, and tack the entire bottom of the boat into position! We started by making a template for the engine bracket, cutting our pieces, and temporarily tacking them into place. From there, we worked our way forward using 1” Divinycell core material to form the running surface of the hull. Each piece was individually cut, fitted, and scribed to match the angle of the chine along the bottom edge, while the upper edge was scribed to fit the keel straight and bulkheads. Once we had our process dialed in, it was essentially rinse and repeat as we worked our way from stern to bow on both the port and starboard sides. Six pieces on port and six pieces on starboard later, and we officially have the entire bottom of the Benchmark 29 tacked into place! Our next step is to glue the bottom panels to the stringers, fine-tune the shape of the running surface, and get everything ready for the next stage of construction.

Benchmark 29 Update: After taking a quick break from the build to attend the @ibexshow, we’re back in the shop and making some progress on the 29! After two days of grinding and shaping both Coosa and Divinycell, we’ve finally finished forming the bottom of the stringers and transom to match the hull’s running surface. We started by mocking up all the chines and splining the joints to create a stronger, more secure bond. We followed the same process along the keel to ensure everything was properly aligned and reinforced. Once we were happy with the fitment, we glued all the joints together and permanently bonded the chines into place. With another major step behind us, we’re getting closer to seeing the hull take shape! Next up, we’ll begin patterning the bottom of the engine bracket and the entire running surface of the boat in preparation for installing our first layers of Divinycell. Stay tuned as we continue building the Benchmark 29 plug to build our molds!

We headed down to Tampa for the @ibexshow to connect with some of our suppliers and check out the latest innovations in the marine industry! While we were there, we stopped by our friends at @seakeeper to experience firsthand why we’ve chosen to make both the Seakeeper Gyro and Seakeeper Ride standard features across the entire Benchmark Boatworks lineup! The technology, engineering, and performance behind these systems are seriously impressive. From eliminating boat roll to delivering a smoother, more controlled ride, Seakeeper is setting the standard for on-water comfort and performance. At Benchmark, our goal is to build boats that deliver the best possible experience on the water, without compromising on quality or performance. We’re excited to work alongside the Seakeeper team and bring this technology to every Benchmark we build!

Day 8: Benchmark 29 Update! Like the song says “is it true” that our stringers are installed! After laminating the stringers and transom together, it is finally time to start installing them into the jig and tying the structure of the 29 together. We were able to fit the stringers into the slots of the bulkheads, making sure everything was seated and lined up properly from bow to stern. Once we had the fit where we wanted it, we glued the stringers into place and toe-nailed them into the bulkheads to keep everything locked in position while the glue cures. With the stringers secured, we were able to fit and glue the laminated transom into place, tying the aft end of the structure together and getting us one step closer to completing the skeleton of the boat. Next up, we’ll finish tying everything together and install the chines, and shaping the bottom of the boat before we install our first sheets of Divinycell and beginning to form the bottom of the Benchmark 29. Every step we are taking is one step closer to our mold! #BenchmarkBoatworks #Benchmark29 #BoatBuilding #CenterConsole #ColdMolded BoatBuilder BuiltFromScratch MadeInUSA

Benchmark 29 Update! Today we completed all of the cuts on our @lagunatools CNC for the stringers and chines, bringing us one step closer to getting the bottom of the 29 together. Next up, we’ll glue the stringers together and install them into the slots in the bulkheads, glue up and install the transom, and get the chines mounted onto the jig. Once everything is locked into place, we’ll be ready for a big milestone—installing our first sheets of Divinycell onto the bottom of the boat! The skeleton of the Benchmark 29 is coming together. Stay tuned for the next update as we start putting some skin on her!
