I would like to share with you a bit of the process of making the film «When the chair fell into the void ».

The film is at intersection of two genres: documentary and dance. It based on the interview of the people who experienced forced migration. A lot of them prefer to stayed anonymous even though they were willing to share their stories. That is why each of the testimonies is represented by the performers in a huge mask.

The masks are entirely handmade from leftover material by me with the help of @asia_kouts and @manuel.ronda.21 . One of the challenges was their weight. The performers needed to make quite intense movements while wearing the masks. Therefore we with choreographer Manuel Ronda @manuel.ronda.21 dedicated a time for rehearsals in order to find the right mood for each character. It was a process of finding the balance between the intimate testimonies, our ideas, movement of camera with @vic_candice and boundaries of human body.

When we arrived to shoot we exactly knew how each shoot should look like. Even though there was still space for unpredictable elements.

It was great privilege to hear and to capture the testimonies of the characters. And it was a wild experience to explore the streets of Brussels with such a great crew.

“When the chair fell into the void” is adapted line taken from a poem by Brodsky about the loss of everything that formed the foundation of your everyday life.

Through the stories of these four characters, we can discover what they found as they let go of their past.
