Growing up, I was always seen as the weird one who liked trains. Whilst everyone else played with a football or transformers figures, I used to draw images of trains with whatever pens, pencils or paper were available.

It felt like I couldn’t fit in.
I had no backbone to stand on when I was made fun of.
So I shied away.

But I never took a strong interest in your typical Flying Scotsman or Orient Express. It was the daily commuter trains running from Liverpool Street, often overlooked by many. One of these was the Class 315, which growing up, ran under the “First Great Eastern” branding. Taking one of these trains to my grandparents’ place in Romford, sporting blue, green and grey curves, running to get the window seat, and arguing with my brother as to who got to press the button at the end. That was my childhood in a nutshell, and I wouldn’t change a thing of it.

Fast forward to today, I cofounded a non-profit group, own the sole surviving Class 315 train left in the country, and repainted it exactly the way I drew it twenty years ago.

By no means was this a solo endeavour. I want to thank everyone who’s helped with making this preservation effort get back on its feet. There was a very real chance that without some real input, the train would be headed for scrap. I just couldn’t let that happen. Whether you helped with restoration, promotion, moving it on site or simply donated to the cause, you all know who you are.

I think 6-year old me would be proud.
