In November 2025, I successfully defended my final year project titled “Design and Implementation of an AI-Powered Automated Bird Detection and Deterrent System for Sustainable Agriculture.”

This project set out to tackle a real and pressing problem, crop losses caused by bird infestations by combining artificial intelligence, computer vision, and solar-powered embedded systems into a practical, field-ready solution.

The journey from concept to execution was both challenging and rewarding. It involved extensive research, dataset collection and preprocessing, model training and evaluation, as well as the integration of mechanical, electrical, and software components into a single autonomous system. From designing the mechanical structure to deploying a machine vision model on a Raspberry Pi and ensuring efficient power management with solar energy, every stage required problem-solving, iteration, and resilience.

A significant part of this journey was the guidance I received. My supervisors, Engr. Uche Ezechi and Engr. Victor Amu, played a crucial role in shaping the direction and quality of this work. Their support went beyond supervision—they provided technical insights, challenged assumptions, encouraged deeper thinking, and ensured the project maintained both academic rigor and practical relevance.

I am also very grateful to Asogwa Chrisanctus, my project partner, whose commitment and substantial contributions were instrumental to bringing this project to completion.

Beyond the final result, this project transformed my perspective as an engineer. It strengthened my skills in artificial intelligence, embedded systems, and system integration, while also improving my ability to approach complex problems with a structured and innovative mindset. More importantly, it broadened my view of how technology can be applied to solve real-world challenges, particularly in sectors like agriculture that directly impact livelihoods and food security.

This experience has been a defining part of my academic journey, and it has further fueled my drive to build solutions that are not only technically sound but also meaningful and impactful.
