We’re happy to welcome Mark Sanders as one of our presenters for To The Beat Y’all! Join us as he explores how Hip Hop pedagogy and community engagement can transform higher education through collaboration, oral history, and shared knowledge. You won’t want to miss this engaging session!

How Hip Hop Can Transform Higher Education Community Engagement

Drawing upon Johns Dewey’s philosophy of education, Richard Rorty’s idea of redescription, and P. Thandi Hicks Harper’s hip hop development theory, I will explore various ways in which hip hop can help transform higher education community engagement. Higher education’s engagement with hip hop should be one that aims to form a flourishing community in which all of the members partake in the co-creation of knowledge. This de-centered model of community building is how higher education should approach community engagement, and it is how I approach my pedagogy. Breaking down the walls of the classroom and inviting the world outside into the classroom and leaving the classroom to engage the world outside of it can be done in many ways and hip hop offers an extremely powerful model. I will present the framework through which I understand hip hop pedagogy and then discuss my class, Hip Hop as Redescription, as well as my ongoing oral history project on hip hop in Charlotte (with the help of some of the participants) as examples of the ways in which hip hop can help redefine and transform educational experiences and community engagement.
