A little life lately.

Family, work, TK recaps around the dinner table, plenty of time in the water, and the annual @urbansurf4kids Wet Hop collaboration with @sandiegobrewing.

September is off to a solid start.

Spurred by San Diego Brewing Co.’s medal win at last year’s Great American Beer Festival Pro-Am Competition, local homebrew club QUAFF develops a strategic program to increase the county’s odds of repeating at this year’s event. A month ago we celebrated the life of Ted Zuidema. I can’t thank @sandiegobrewing enough for hosting such an important event for our family and friends. Though it was one of the hardest parts of this journey, it did provide a little closure. Thank you to everyone that came to celebrate with us and the ones that wanted to but couldn’t make it. Here are a few words from my speech:

My dad has always been the life of the party, the loudest one in the room and the hardest person to put into words. “You’d just have to meet him”-I’d say. We’ve found so many pictures in his house that I’ve never seen and received so many from friends. I look over them as if I’m looking at generations of people. He lived so many lives. His hobbies, interests, fashion sense and evolution of hair into…well-facial hair. You see this story of a person that didn’t even make it to 70, but lived so much more than most ever will.

In my life, my dad played many roles. He was a teacher who showed me the right and wrong way to do things, even if I was a reluctant student. He was like a sibling that teased me relentlessly and toughened me up for the real world. He was a fierce protector who intimidated anyone that came close and kept me safe from harm. He was my boss at work but also locked his office door so we could eat rolled tacos and gossip about the shop drama. We would sing together, do yard work and visit Home Depot on Sundays and he bought me my first IPA, a Pliny, right here at SDBC.

But most of all, he was one of my truest best friends, in every sense of the role. Criticizing me when I needed to be brought down to earth. Supporting me when I didn’t have words to explain what was wrong. Telling me I was tough when I felt pathetic. And that’s what I miss the most. I miss my friend. I miss my dad.

I was recently told “grief is having love and nowhere to put it” and the 3 of us are trying to take it as a reason to just live our lives like my dad did. Enjoy the time we have together doing what we love most. I think we have to measure someone’s life in experiences not in years, and if that’s the case, then Ted outlived us all. ♥️
