Can’t speak highly enough about every meal we have at S&P Lunch in the old Eisenberg’s! The Mel Brooks has become my go-to sandwich, with roast turkey, corned beef and cole slaw on rye, and I’ve come to believe that they serve what is now my favorite pastrami in the city. Matzo ball soup and a cherry lime rickey to round out a perfect lunch! ❤️🗽🥪

Out of all the bites from my NYC trip, I’m dreaming of the tuna melt from @sandplunch. Incredible. Crispy, cheesy and creamy. That garlicky pickle and those fries 🔥 AND friendly and speedy service. Superb lunch in Manhattan! Can’t wait to go back.

New York City has a long list of places where you can get a great pastrami sandwich but S&P Lunch, the historic luncheonette located across the street from the iconic Flatiron building not only serves one for under $20 but you can enjoy it on old-fashioned rye bread with a pickle served on the side, at their long lunch counter, bumping elbow-to-elbow with the person sitting next to you while watching the theater of each station move in the kitchen. It’s a real New York experience and one we really love and highly recommend. (Swipe left for 2nd interior photo of lunch counter). S&P Lunch was reopened in 2022 by Eric Finkelstein and Matt Ross in the longtime home of Eisenberg’s. (Swipe left for 3rd exterior photo). The team lovingly preserved the original sandwich shop which dates back to 1928, and serves dishes that approximate the past without romanticizing it. Its narrow interior is dominated by a vintage long lunch counter complete with twenty low swivel stools. The original wooden, mirrored back bar displays the daily specials and soups listed on changeable boards and a dual Tostato Ottimo flat grill is used to make a variety of grilled sandwiches, including a classic tuna melt, which we also recommend. @sandplunch always my top choice for diner food. Best Rueben sando in the city if you ask me, be sure to get the cottage fries to complete the job.

This is the first of a couple Instagram tours of New York City by yours truly. It’s a complete joy to share what I saw in 20 slides, and to be back in the city that helped shape so many of my transformative years. I did my master’s here, and it’s nice to return and feel the energy of this place again.

1/ Started the trip at the Freehand Hotel @freehandhotels on Lexington, not far from the Flatiron Building. A cute independent boutique hotel designed by Roman and Williams, the OG concept design team out of New York. They’re known for their theatrical set designs, but also for the carpentry, the craftsmanship, and those amazing timber millworks. You can feel the hand in every joint.

1/ The building was once the George Washington Hotel, built in 1928, and the new life they gave it feels like a fresh chapter on an old story. Freehand is also the fourth in a series of hotels they designed, after Miami, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

1/ Roman and Williams has quietly shaped a lot of New York hospitality:

* The Royalton: their early commercial break, a provocative renovation of the lobby
* The Ace Hotel: a 1904 hotel (the former Breslin) layered with pieces from different periods and sources, with custom steel pipe furniture in the rooms
* The Standard, High Line: the 70s-cool hotel with the famous Boom Boom Room lounge
* The Viceroy on 57th: a thirty-story building they designed from the ground up, with views of Central Park
This is the kind of detail I go looking for when I travel.

2/ Breakfast at S&P Lunch @sandplunch, a short walk from the Freehand. I had the pastrami on rye, with eggs, bacon, a delicious pickle, and a side of fresh OJ. It’s a staple diner of the neighborhood and the community, and it has been around a very long time.

2/ Some history: it opened in 1928, started by Austrian Jewish immigrants Charles Schwadron and Rubin Pulver, as one of many lunch counters feeding the garment workers from the nearby lofts. It sits across from the Flatiron Building.

2/ The interior is a maintained original, like stepping inside an Edward Hopper painting. For decades it ran as Eisenberg’s, and it was reopened as S&P Lunch, with

How to spend a full day in NYC 👇

• Breakfast: @chez_ma_tante 🥞 (Go on the weekend for brunch and get the pancakes, trust me).

• Lunch: @sandplunch 🥪 (Their tuna melt is an absolute must, but their breakfast is so good too).

• Dinner: @ivan_ramen 🍜 (A classic that never disappoints).

• Flea Market: @chelsea_flea 🛋️ (29 W 25th St, Flatiron. Open weekends year-round, perfect for vintage furniture, unique collectibles, and rare finds!).
