If you’ve passed through his little corner of BGC, you may already know this face. #BGCcatCrisP has been here for while now — big, serious, and usually keeping a careful eye on everything around him.

But that reputation only tells half his story.

Nobody appointed him babysitter.

Yet whenever tiny newcomers appeared, this big adult male somehow ended up with babies sitting beside him, following him around, or squeezing themselves into his space.

And he let them.

Many of the kittens appearing here weren’t healthy kittens simply looking for food.

Some arrived painfully thin. Some were already showing signs of illness. Some seemed far too young to be surviving outside without their mother.

And Cris P would suddenly have another little family around him.

There are photos of kittens sleeping against his belly, climbing into his bed and curling themselves into his body.

For an animal with so little himself, Cris P always seemed willing to share the little comfort he had.

Our volunteers learned something else about him: when the kittens were around, Cris P paid attention.

This is the part that stopped being cute a long time ago.

New kittens kept appearing in the same area. Volunteers would feed, treat, foster, adopt out and try to help — only to find another tiny face waiting there later.

Some survived.

Some disappeared.

Some were hit by vehicles.

And then there would be another batch.

Someone was already caught and even brought to the police but ot kept happening..

Then came one of those moments that reminds us why we keep asking.

Someone saw what was happening and offered to take the kittens in — get them checked, foster them, and give us time to find them homes.

For once, there was somewhere for them to go.

And there was supposed to be room for Lili too.

Lili was different.

She and Cris P had shared this little corner for a long time. When the opportunity came to bring her somewhere safer, we tried.

She hid on pickup day.
