I met Maren Curtis in a coffee shop in Mexico City a few months ago. As a tribute to a trans family member, she had written a very funny short script that would come to be called Holy Shift, about an evangelical family struggling to embrace their trans, non-binary child, and she was looking for a director. We clicked, and I joined a team that producer Sandra Dorst had assembled in Reno, Nevada.

The Reno film family (metaphorical and literal - our cinematographer Bryon, and production designer, Shannon, are a married creative power couple) went to work. We received a great audition from Fiona McGaraghan and assembled our fictional family around them, bringing in the hilarious (and game to shave his beard and walk in impossible heels for four days) Jeremy Urann as our misguided Dad, Sophie Moeller as a mom trapped by love and faith between a rock and a hard place, Nate Kalleres as a frustrated and humiliated big brother, and Greta Jones as the brilliantly sunshine-y little sister.

And the team kept growing (see the pic). While Instagram doesn’t give enough room for me to address everyone by name, suffice it to say that everyone involved in the production both in front and behind the lens was incredibly talented, creative and generous and I miss them already. We spent the last four days laughing together, crying together (this was honestly mostly me, I’m a marshmallow), and making something that I can’t wait to share with you.

I’m honored and grateful that Maren chose me to direct this. I’m so moved by the support and trust I received from our majority Reno-based cast and crew. The Reno drag and queer community did so much to support us on screen and in fundraising (Sister Bella de Ball from the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence hosted our wrap party and it was beautiful).

And my wrap gift? A Holy Shift poster signed by John Waters and given to me on his 80th.

My heart is bursting. I hope I get to make more with this team. ❤️🏳️‍⚧️🎥🥲 #transfilm #transfilmmaker #queerfilm #filmreno #renofilm
