What does Texas Tech men’s golf head coach Greg Sands look for in a recruit?

Not just a number on a leaderboard.

Coach Sands says the priority is a process-minded kid — someone willing to work, be coached, and keep getting better.

For a program built on development and sustained success under Sands, that mindset matters more than anything else.

Coach Sands said the most important thing a coach can do is create a safe space for people, not just chase trophies.

Save this if you needed that reminder today.

Greg Sands built his whole coaching philosophy around humility, honesty, and relationships.

Not perfection.
Not ego.
Not pretending to have it all figured out.

Just showing up real, owning mistakes, and helping people grow as humans first.

That’s why his players keep coming back.
That’s why the culture lasts.
That’s what excellence actually looks like.

Maybe the strongest teams are built by the most honest leaders. What do you think matters more in a leader: results or relationships?

Sometimes the next step brings excitement and a question we can’t shake: “Am I good enough?”

@sandsman14 remembers landing his first coaching job and feeling mostly excitement, yet some fear. But that uncertainty became an invitation to rely more deeply on God.

When we don’t have all the answers, we can loosen our grip on pride and grow in dependence on Him.

Where has uncertainty helped you lean on God?

@ttumensgolf Coach @sandsman14 knows that humility and competitiveness go hand in hand.

Compete fiercely, own your mistakes, and stay willing to learn.

Real confidence isn’t pretending you have it all figured out. Humility is being honest about what went wrong and working to get better.

Key principles to building and elite culture.

The pause swing has been a game changer. Playing some of worst golf before I started it, and now I’ve been doing it for about 2 weeks and I already feel a lot more confident stepping up to a ball, my scores have shown it too, shooting 71,76,68 since I started pausing. I started the pause because I could rarely repeat the same swing, and now it gives me a place to stop every time I swing, making it very easy to repeat every single time, at least for me. I’m excited for it to help me in my journey of accomplishing my goal of playing D1 golf.

A new chapter begins. ❤️🖤

I’m proud to announce that I’ll be continuing my academic and golf career at Texas Tech University.

I’m grateful for everyone who has been part of my journey so far — especially my family, coaches, and all those who have supported me and believed in me along the way.

Thank you to @sandsman14 and @javgolf26 for giving me this opportunity and trusting me to be a part of the program. I’m looking forward to getting to work, competing at the highest level, and continuing to grow both on and off the course.

Excited for what’s ahead and ready to give everything I have to the Red Raiders.

Wreck ’Em! 🌵❤️🖤
