This spring break our family joined our close friends @sandywilder2 @mattiswilder and @bayeswilder on a climbing trip in Red River Gorge, Kentucky—an endless expanse of stunning sandstone.

When I wasn’t belaying or hauling myself up the rock or packing snacks, I tried my skill at climbing photography. Still true to form, I stuck with my old 35mm manual Voigtländer lens and kept my feet on the ground, while gaining a whole new respect for the photographers who rig themselves high above to get the shot.

While there, Bayes (a.k.a. Big Brother Bayes) sent a 5.14c called Golden Ticket at just 14 years old. I first photographed Bayes coming into the world (literally) and now, watching him rise (also literally) into this moment was pretty epic.  But I think I’ll leave the big wall photo shoots to someone else!

I return with scraped hands and sore arms; grateful for new perspectives, old friendships, and family adventures. Here’s a peek into our time there.  @downhill_daddy

Wow!! Such a beautiful haven and a crazy place.

This is Rocklands, in the heart of wild South Africa. Vast rolling hills and mountains covered with breathtaking orange rocks scattered about. A wonderland to any climber or other alike. Nothing can go wrong here. It’s just you and the world, stretching on immensely farther than the naked eye can see. And my lucky self got to spend 3 weeks here. No worries, no regrets, nothing weighing me down. Just climbing and living the best life possible.

This trip was with my family and another family whom are friends of ours (the Hsin family). We got to do all sorts of other things in the new land such as a safari, shark cage diving, random exploring, and food eating. Although we did those other things, our main plan was to climb. And well… we definitely succeeded on that front!😁😁.

I was able to have such a fun enjoyable trip and at the same time, push my goals and abilities in the sport. I came into the trip wanting to do tons of volume in my near-limit and to do my first V13. I accomplished both with flying colors. I even sent 22 climbs of the grade V10(7c+) and up!

The grades aren’t the real important part. What made my trip the best were the most fun climbs. For example I got to do “The Rhino” 7b+ which is a huge classic and a must do. I also got to do some of my parent’s FAs. I sent one of my dad’s more well known FAs “Black Mango Chutney” 7c+ which was amazing. I also did one of my mom’s only FAs “To Siemay” 7a which holds great stories.

The exotic African wildlife is a whole another story on its own. So many animals that can only be found there. Let alone that they are so beautiful, unique, and interesting. I lucked out and got to see so many great ones (too many to list) 😂😅.

Well that’s about it… (I could probably keep going on for days but I can’t write too long). For people who want to see stats here is a list of all the 7c+(V10) climbs and up ranked in order of most enjoyable to me. (List in comments) ➡️

During the past month I’ve had the amaizing oportunity to travel with my family.
It has been my first time visiting the U.S a country very diferent from Europa’s countrys.
We’ve been visiting NYC and then we spent an amaizing days at the RRG.
We’ve learnt a lot of it’s culture and of the formation of the country, we’ve also practiced a lot of English and of course, climbed a lot.

This trip has helped my mind to disconnect from all the bad that this year has brought me, I’ve also meet some new friends and during all the trip we had a lot of fun.

Thanks to my parents for making this possible.

I’m very proud of myself for the big effort I’ve put into heal that injury and finally be able to Climb and enjoy the rocks.

I will miss competing this weekend at the Spanish Championship but I wish you all the best of luck and above all, even if you don't get the result you expect, enjoy yourself because now that I can't compete, I've seen how lucky I was last year.

Although I sent this problem the next day (and have video), this was one of the ultimate punts I had in my climbing career. Beyond Life always held a dear spot in my heart. I was there when @jasonkehl_cryptochild put this up with myself, @dave_graham_ and Matt Boz… in fact, Jason chose the name after we went for a rest day to Price to watch the movie 13 ghosts. There’s a scene in that movie where a lawyer gets cut in half by a sliding glass door in a haunted house. It was pretty shocking, and during the movie with the crew, I pretty much said out loud “holy crap that guy is beyond life!” I guess Jason liked that line and so he immortalized it. I wasn’t really strong enough to send the problem back then but years later, when I was strong enough, it was really fun to put it down. This was at the end of a long session of figuring it out, and rapidfire attempts, and I was just out of gas on the literal 5.10 last move lol! It was a glorious fail. Anyhow, it’s awesome to hear Siemay and @sandywilder2 @smoove_js (film credits) and @mattiswilder cheering me on. A lot of people nowadays really talk down on the high energy cheerleading, but it used to get us psyched, and I was definitely a big yeller. Anyhow, the send is on my YouTube if anybody wants to see it. …It’s been 32 years of climbing and it’s still my favorite thing to do in this reality! I guess it will be until I myself am Beyond Life! 🔥
