Had the most belissimo wine & dine experience hosted by my teen idol and role model @tegespritasoraya and dear friend and super talented designer @kleting at @sistersopentable

Starting the dinner with refreshing drinks and light appetizers that were simple yet so fresh and comforting already set the tone for the whole evening. The buttery shrimp, fresh fishes, comforting pastas, juicy tomatoes, rich cheese, olive oil, balsamic, warm bread with different kinds of dipping, the soup, the wine… delicious soulful dishes made with so much heart. The food just kept coming until we were completely full and happy.

And the dates turned into something so delicious I honestly can’t even explain it properly. The pineapple with cheese too… no words can explain how good it was. One of those dinners that makes time slow down a little.

Great food, heartfelt conversations, and wonderful people around the table. Hope we can cook together very soon and make an impact along the way 🤍

Last week, @ycabfoundation gave me the opportunity to meet Azzam, an alumnus of its flagship program, Rumah Belajar Batik (RBB), in Pekalongan.

What makes his story inspiring is not only that he has successfully grown into a young batik-preneur, but also the way he chooses to grow alongside his community.

Through his batik workshop, Azzam empowers mothers in his neighbourhood by creating job opportunities and learning spaces. But what touched us even more was his inclusive approach. For mothers who cannot attend the workshop because they need to care for their children at home, Azzam allows them to continue working and creating batik from home.

Because empowerment should adapt to people’s realities—not the other way around.

Azzam also believes that preserving batik means respecting nature. He applies a zero-waste principle in his production process and develops his own natural dyes to reduce harmful impact on the environment. Even the wax used in the batik-making process is produced in-house to ensure higher quality and durability for artisans who work through long, detailed crafting processes.

Listening to Azzam’s journey reminded us that batik is more than just fabric.
It is culture.
It is a livelihood.
It is innovation.
It is a community.
It is hope.

And perhaps the biggest question we left with was this:

Imagine if Indonesia had more young people like Azzam.
Young people who choose to build businesses that empower others.
Those who preserve culture while embracing sustainability.
Those who create opportunities instead of waiting for them.

How much stronger could our economy become? How many more communities could flourish? And how beautifully could the legacy of batik continue to live on for generations to come? And would you like to be part of the process?

"No One Wants to Be Bad": Witnesing the Doi Tung Miracle in Chiang Rai

Stepping into the Golden Triangle—the mountainous convergence of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar near the Mekong and Ruak rivers—always offers a profound perspective on my decades in philanthropy and international development. Once synonymous with drug cartels and opium cultivation that fueled severe social decay and structural poverty, this rugged landscape has been completely transformed. This remarkable shift is the result of the Doi Tung Development Project, initiated in 1988 by the Mae Fah Luang Foundation.

Now recognized globally by the UNODC as a premier model for sustainable alternative development, its success is deeply rooted in the late Princess Srinagarindra’s philosophy: "No one wants to be bad, but they do not have the opportunity to do good." Alongside my colleagues from the YCAB Foundation, this study visit has been an invaluable space to reflect on structural program management strategies. After settling in at the Royal Guest House in Chiang Rai, we began with deep dives into alternative livelihood initiatives and a historical tour of the Royal Villa.

The synergy between tourism and human capital development was vividly clear as I wandered through the Mae Fah Luang Garden, a breathtaking space that doubles as a practical agricultural training ground for the Doi Tung community. As a practitioner of strategic partnerships, I was particularly struck by the social enterprise model at Navuti Company. Here, Arabica coffee and macadamia nuts have replaced illicit crops, securing long-term, sustainable income for the locals.

At the Cottage Industry Centre, we witnessed the seamless blend of female artisans' local wisdom with modern innovation in Mulberry paper production, weaving, and natural dyeing. MFLF’s commitment to the environment was equally evident in their zero-waste-to-landfill facilities and wastewater management.

Continue to comment ⬇️⬇️⬇️ The historic Royal Villa and Royal Guest House in Doi Tung, Chiang Rai, Thailand. Formerly the royal residence and base of operations for HRH the late Princess Mother, this site was used to closely observe the region's development progress. It stands today as a symbol of her enduring commitment to improving living conditions for the local people.
