@royalacademyofart.thehague

What an amazing weekend at @wereldmuseum.amsterdam!!!

We celebrated the Spring Festival with more than 1600 people each day from different backgrounds who are interested in Chinese culture. Look at how fat that horse has turned out!

It was awesome working with my friends who have participated as artists and artisans.

I was giving a talk on Neo Chinese Style on Saturday with the fashion curator @daan_van_d; and people were lining up for the dumpling workshop on Sunday. I wish I could do more to not disappoint so many who didn't get a spot. There's a lot of creativity expressed in the dumpling making 🙌🙌🙌

Happy Spring Festival everyone ✨✨✨

Sunday Sculpture - Revisiting The Cullinan

_____

As part of the transformation of the 'Nieuwe Pijp', visual artist Sanja Medić created an artwork that bridges the neighborhood’s past and present. Inspired by master diamond cutter Joseph Asscher, Medić designed nine diamond-shaped glass sculptures — ‘neighborhood jewels’ — that reflect the rich history and unique identity of this remarkable area.

To achieve this, she employed an artisanal, innovative, complex, and almost alchemical production process. Each sculpture alludes to the transformation of a diamond: from a rough stone that is quarried, cleaved, cut, and polished, to a gem proudly worn in its setting.

Throwback Bradwolff Projects: A Very Light Moment with Sanja Medic!

In the autumn of 2018, Sanja Medic transformed Bradwolff Projects with her striking site-specific installation. This former hospital space, with its symmetrical architecture and north-facing windows, provides a unique context for exploring the experiences that light can offer. The indirect daylight streaming in through the windows not only reveals the passage of time but is also an essential part of Sanja’s artistic vision.

In her work, Sanja posed a thought-provoking question: what if the sun were to illuminate us directly? What if the sun were to send its rays from an imaginary point in the Pacific Ocean? By exploring these concepts, she created the illusion of sunlight entering the space from below, inviting us to reconsider our perceptions of light, space, and time.

Thanks to Sanja Medic for embracing abstract ideas and providing us with a new lens through which to view our surroundings. We remain inspired by the possibilities that art offers to see the world differently.
