Mahā Saptamī | The Awakening of the Mṛṇmayī Mūrti

Mahā Saptamī marks one of the most sacred stages of Śāradīya Durgotsava in Odisha, when the Mṛṇmayī Mūrti of Mahādevī is ritually invoked and consecrated for worship. The day begins with Nabapatrikā Snāna, followed by the ceremonial purification and installation of the sacred plant forms representing the Devī. The Prāṇa-Pratiṣṭhā is then performed, ritually invoking divine presence into the image, transforming the earthen form into a living focus of worship.

The Mūrti receives Netra Unmīlana, awakening the divine vision, followed by Ṣoḍaśopacāra Pūjā, mantra-japa, dhyāna, offerings of flowers, incense, lamps, naivedya and bhoga. In Odisha, these observances carry distinctive regional traditions, with local śāstric and temple practices shaping the manner of worship.

Mahā Saptamī therefore signifies the formal awakening and establishment of Devī’s presence, marking the commencement of the principal worship of the Mṛṇmayī Mūrti during Durgotsava.

Today marks the solemn culmination of the Ṣoḍaśa Dinātmaka Mahā Pūjā of Maa Bimala, as the sacred sequence of Her divine manifestations reaches its final form with the formidable Daśabhuja Besha—the ten-armed revelation of the immeasurable power of Ādi Śakti. With this Besha, the visible splendour of the sixteen-day worship draws to its close; yet the most austere phase of the sacred cycle is yet to unfold.

From Mahā Saptamī, Mahāṣṭamī and Mahā Navamī, the Tridinatmaka Tāṅtrika Mahā Pūjā of Maa Bimala shall be performed in the deep hours of the night, after the Pahuda of Lord Jagannath. As the temple falls into profound stillness, the Mother shall be approached through solemn Tantric observances, ancient mantras, austerity and strict ritual discipline.

These are not hours of spectacle. They are hours of Śakti—when the outer world recedes and the sanctum becomes a realm of profound silence, sacred secrecy and spiritual intensity. The darkness surrounding these rites is not merely the absence of light; it evokes the mysterious, unmanifest dimension of Śakti—the primordial force beyond ordinary perception, from which every manifestation arises and into which every manifestation ultimately dissolves.

With the completion of Mahā Navamī, this intense three-day observance shall reach its conclusion. Finally, on Vijaya Dashami, the grand cycle of Maa Bimala’s Mahā Pūjā shall come to rest with the solemn Viśrāma Pūjā, marking the sacred repose of the Mother within the Bimala Śakti Pīṭha.

🌺 MAHĀ ṢAṢṬHĪ | The Sacred Awakening of Maa Durga

Mahā Ṣaṣṭhī marks the auspicious commencement of the Śāradīya Durgā Pūjā, when the Divine Mother is ceremonially invoked, awakened and welcomed for Her sacred worship.

In the traditional ritual observances of Odisha, the day begins with Saṅkalpa and Kalparambha, followed by Bilva Nimantraṇa, through which the sacred Bilva tree is invoked in connection with the presence of Śakti.

At dusk comes the profound rite of Bodhana—the awakening of Maa Durga, followed by Āmantraṇa, the formal invitation to the Goddess, and Adhivāsa, through which the deity and the sacred articles of worship are ritually consecrated.

Amid the auspicious resonance of śaṅkha, ghanta and Mardala, and the glow of the Sandhyā Ārati, Ṣaṣṭhī becomes the sacred threshold through which the presence of the Mother is welcomed.

On Ṣaṣṭhī, Ādi Śakti is awakened through Bodhana, welcomed through Āmantraṇa, and ritually established through Adhivāsa—the beginning of Her divine presence among devotees. 🙏

॥ श्री मातङ्ग्यै नमः ॥

Matangi Besha of Maa Bimala represents the profound dimensions of knowledge, vāṇī, nāda and tantric sādhana. Her blue complexion signifies the depth of consciousness and esoteric wisdom. The parrot represents speech, mantra and the power of sacred sound. The veena signifies nāda, music, knowledge and the harmony of thought and expression. The blue lotus represents spiritual wisdom, transcendence and the unfolding of consciousness. The Abhaya Mudra bestows fearlessness, protection and courage.

This Chaturbhuja form reflects the essence of Neela Saraswati, Rājaśyāmalā and Ucchiṣṭa Chāṇḍālī—the Divine Mother as the embodiment of esoteric knowledge and sādhana.

Banadurga Besha of Maa Bimala | Śrīmandira’s Living Ritual Heritage

The sacred Banadurga Besha of Maa Bimala embodies the living ritual culture of Śrī Jagannātha Mandira, Purī, where centuries-old traditions of worship, divine iconography and devotional service continue to flourish. Within the sacred precincts of Śrī Kṣetra, Maa Bimala holds an eminent place in Odisha’s Śākta heritage, reflecting the inseparable spiritual relationship between the Goddess and the ritual universe of Lord Jagannātha.

In this distinctive Besha, Maa Bimala holds the Śaṅkha, Chakra, Dhanusha and Bāṇa, symbolising divine power and the protection of Dharma. Her graceful Tribhanga posture, with one foot delicately raised, evokes the sculptural elegance characteristic of Odisha’s Kalinga artistic tradition.

The portrayal of Lord Viṣṇu applying ālātā to the Goddess’s raised foot, with Lord Śiva standing beside Her, lends this sacred composition profound theological and artistic significance.

More than a ceremonial adornment, the Banadurga Besha reflects Śrīmandira’s enduring ritual continuity—a living heritage sustained through seva, śraddhā and generations of devotion in Utkala Bhūmi.

Beyond its majestic temples and living traditions, Odisha holds deep esoteric rituals that silently weave the realm of faith with untamed nature. One such profound, lesser-known heritage is Rakhya Panchami (ରକ୍ଷା ପଞ୍ଚମୀ / ରେଖା ପଞ୍ଚମୀ)—also fondly recognized in folklore as Baghamamu Parba. 🌾🐅
Observed annually on the 5th day of Bhadraba Krushna-Paksha, particularly across the historic 16 Sasanas of Puri and extending across ancient Odia tracts, this day marks a sacred vow of threshold protection.
From the ritualistic gathering of Juna grass and binding of the sacred Pendua inscribed with the protective Ghantakarna Bhairava Mantra, to drawing divine sentinels at the doorway and offering Budha Chakuli to pacify nocturnal wildlife—this tradition reflects an age-old philosophy of harmonious coexistence rather than conflict with nature.
Swipe through to explore the sacred mechanics, mantras, and cultural essence of this unique Odia ritual! ➡️
