Lookie what I got in the mail from @santaclarareview ! 💌Thank you for publishing my short story “Émile and the Atoms”!🤗🎉

What happens when your person, the reason you transplanted yourself on the other side of the world for almost 60 years, is no longer here, and you need to choose between staying or going “back home”? Where do you belong? Where is home, really? That was the premise that inspired this work of fiction.

This is the short story I’m most proud of so far! 😭AAAAAAH!!! ***brief scream of delight*** I have endless drafts of this baby in various stages of growth… it is so cathartic, not to mention 👏A👏Freaking👏Milestone to have it finally out of my 🧠 and into the 🌏!!!

❤️The story, which takes place in Singapore, is also a character study of my father, his neurodivergence, identity and personal philosophies. And soooo it is a piece of my heart❤️

My King of the Hill fan fiction is finally here in @santaclarareview! I wrote this right after leaving Texas and didn’t realize how badly I would miss that place- how badly I would miss El Paso and West Texas and Austin and all the people in it. This is my attempt at hanging on to the memory of all its colors, its smells, its heat (!), Mexican communities that cured my homesickness. Go buy a copy and feel my yeehaw feels.

Here’s a sneak preview of Émile and The Atoms, my short story in the next @santaclarareview 💚!

Though a work of fiction, it draws on the life and identity of my neurodivergent father, who has spent most of his years in Singapore—rooting himself around my mother, estranged from France, the country of his birth, and discovering a form of belonging that transcends culture itself, a belonging suspended in the very atoms of the air.

I am really proud of this short story. This one means a lot to me, as it is at once a character study and ode to my dad❤️

Thank you to Jian Hu, awesome fiction editor, and the whole team for their hard work!🤩

Founded in 1869 at Santa Clara College, The Santa Clara Review is one of the oldest literary print publications in the Western U.S. I’m honored to be a part of it, and for my story from across the planet to have found its home there🌏💖🐸😄🤗

Forthcoming in Vol.113.2!

Celebrating J. Carino’s cover feature in the @santaclarareview! 🌼

The work featured, “Boundless”, was part of our collaboration with the @aliforneycenter last year.

For this limited edition print, @j.carino.art notes, “It feels like a spiritual experience to see them. The towering yucca flower stalks feel like glowing candles lighting the way forward.”

For this limited edition series, Carino hand-embellished the prints with gold ink to further enhance the already shimmering palette, and to recall art deco lacquer work, Gustav Klimt’s iridescent paintings, and Millard Sheets’s mosaics.

ONLY A FEW PRINTS LEFT! TAP TO SHOP!
