Sapphire Cruz is a senior libero at Charlotte Amalie High School in the Virgin Islands. The 5-foot-1 defensive stalwart detailed her journey in this Digging Dish.
“I started playing volleyball at a JVC club in St. Croix,” she said. “I was 6 years old when I started to play.”
Cruz has played mostly at setter and libero.
“I haven’t always played libero,” she said. “I played as a setter up to ninth grade.”
Cruz has aspirations to play college volleyball.
“Yes, it has always been a dream of mine to play in college,” she said.
Making team plays gets Cruz energized.
“My favorite aspect of volleyball is feeling and the sight of when I give my setter a perfect pass or I dig or dive for a ball nobody would,” she said.
Finding ways to stay in shape helps Cruz keep on top of her game.
“I sometimes go to the gym to keep my legs in shapes and then I play softball to work out and to just keep going,” she said.
She offered words of wisdom.
“For younger players, just enjoy volleyball when you can because when you start hitting those double digits and you imagine yourself playing this like a career, that’s when your mind gets involved and mental health is important,” she said.
