International Chess Day 2026 | Every Move Creates a Better Tomorrow

This International Chess Day, Pawns to Kings celebrated chess not just as a game, but as a powerful tool for education, inclusion, and positive social change.

As part of our #FromScreensToSquares movement, we brought together educators, policymakers, psychologists, parents, and young minds to start an important conversation on promoting healthier screen habits and encouraging children to engage in activities that foster critical thinking, creativity, and meaningful human connections.

A key highlight of the celebration was the launch of our comic-style Chess Training Book, complemented by animated learning videos in English, Hindi, Assamese, and other regional languages. By blending storytelling, illustrations, and engaging characters, we are making chess fun, accessible, and easy to learn for every child—regardless of language or background.

The event also marked the beginning of the next phase of our journey, as we work towards taking chess education to schools across Assam and to children in rehabilitation and relief centres in Manipur, ensuring that the game becomes a medium for learning, resilience, and hope.

Because for us, chess is more than 64 squares—it is a way to inspire young minds, strengthen communities, and create meaningful change.

As the Communication and Liaison in charge for Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights, Kangpokpi District, Manipur - we wrote this Press Release not like any other official condemnation, which has also been marked with consistent resistance to the impunity and violence unleashing in Manipur. As a tribute to 20 year old Nengtinlhing Haokip's indomitable courage, we will continue our struggle for the rights of women and humanity in all the ways we can. #WeAreHer #ZalenNumei

Press Release, 20th January 2026
Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights, Kangpokpi District.

Reading the testimony of Nengtinlhing Haokip, the 20-year-old girl who passed away on 10th January 2026, is heartbreaking and heartrending.

She encountered the kind of violence at 18 years that any girl on the brink of adulthood would never imagine visited upon her mind, body, and soul.
Rape is not about sex. Rape is not about a woman’s honour. Rape is not a platform to shout about male anger and vengeance.

What is it about then?

We take this day to grieve the pain and devastation that Nengtinlhing had to bear. We also take it as a day to mark her extraordinary strength and resilience that she bore the physical, mental and emotional impact of that violation for more than 2 years. Please remember that the next time any man calls a woman numei thabei (frail womanhood). Let’s see a man who has been able to bear that kind of trauma and survive as long as she did.

The rape and devastation of her mind and body is not just about the rapists who did the deed, the women who handed her over to the rapists, the fact that justice has not been done to this day, even as she took her last breath.

The fact is that where is the state, where are the courts and where is the rule of law in this country that has been unable to give justice to an 18-year-old’s life being tossed aside like a rusted coin?

But it is also that, as a testament to her courage, we must fight the good fight. If today we feel enraged and disturbed, that is where we also get the fuel to fight for the things that count.
