Behind the Screen: Lower East Side Stories, a new monthly cinema club exploring the history, culture, and ongoing evolution of the Lower East Side & East Village!

Each month will feature a screening and hands-on companion experience. Join us in gathering together, both long-time residents and newcomers, to experience our neighborhood’s layered history through film and leave with something to do in the neighborhood: a walk to take, a person to talk to, a skill to try, a cause to join.

We are excited to kick off this series and celebrate Latine Heritage month with Viva Loisaida, by Marlis Momber, and a story circle with some our amazing community leaders who have exemplified what it means to claim space in an ever-changing neighborhood.

still emotionally processing BEGINNER tbh 🌱🥹

Last night gave was a raucous, inspiring, MAGICAL night that included a gloriously botched wooden spoon carving, a housewarming party for a mystery ex-tenant, a decade-in-the-making haircut, a great case for buying the ring light and putting yourself in the spotlight, a burlesque performance complete with licorice tassels and an unexpected maternal compliment, walking away from the dream job to follow an artistic calling, and one very compelling case for blowing up your entire life. Seven storytellers, six decades, one very brave Tuesday.

Thank you to our performers and everyone who packed the room — we hope you left feeling like it's never too late to begin. 🌱

Huge news: we filed our petitions!

Today was the first day we were allowed to hand them in, and you know I’m not one to dally when homework is due 🤓

I’m humbled that 100+ volunteers have given their time to this campaign, and that together we collected 2,000+ signatures—more than four times the number required to get on the ballot.

As an outsider campaign that runs entirely on grassroots people power, we have so much to be proud of.

Thank you so much to everyone who came out—in deep freeze and in fake spring!

I loved seeing the turnout and energy at yesterday's No Kings protests, and I love seeing folks carry that energy forward. The morning after volunteers were out in Hell's Kitchen for @lindseyboylanny because not only did Lindsey show up marching yesterday, she shows up for NYC to improve communities, fight for affordable housing, tenant rights and protections, and improving our communities.

If you want to see change for the better that we protested for, it starts with your community. It starts with your neighbors. It starts with caring for each other the way Lindsey does and the way her team cares about the community knowing there's a fighter on the ballot.

Special election voting is on April 28, vote for Lindsey District 3!

We’re launched! 🚀 Thank you to the 120+ friends and neighbors who came through @bleeckerstreetbarnyc to celebrate and join our fight for a better New York.

Today, we claim that New York is a haven for queer folks, abortion seekers, and immigrants—but that’s an empty promise with the city unaffordable for all but the super-rich, and with our basic rights under attack.

We can keep New York’s promise by ending the politics of scarcity. We can provide abundant and affordable housing, childcare, healthcare, green energy, public transit, education, and everything else New York families need to thrive. It starts with sending aggressive new leaders to Albany.
