POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

We are SO excited that you’re excited about Happy Valley Creative Reuse! 💛

We’ve been a little blown away by the response already (especially on Facebook) where so many of you followed us in just ONE DAY! And along with all that enthusiasm, we’re getting lots of great questions.

So over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing posts answering some of the questions that have been coming in — what creative reuse is, what we’ll accept, what we hope the space will become, how you can get involved, and lots more.

Have a question? Drop it in the comments! There’s a good chance other people are wondering the same thing.

But first: Who are you people?! 😂

We’re Abby Gaffron and Sarah Zappe, and we’re part of the leadership team bringing Happy Valley Creative Reuse to life.

🎨 Sarah is the founder of Kaleidoscope PA, an art and wellness business built around the idea that creativity belongs to everyone. She is an educational psychologist and has spent more than 20 years working in education, teaching and learning, and faculty development at Penn State. Through Kaleidoscope PA, she combines her love of art, creativity, wellness, and community — and she is a big believer in the magic of giving old and forgotten things a new purpose.

🌿 Abby is the founder of Juniper Coaching and a transformational life coach whose work focuses on helping people navigate change, reconnect with themselves, and build meaningful lives. She brings a deep commitment to personal growth, well-being, connection, and creating spaces where people feel welcome and supported.

Together, we started imagining something bigger: a nonprofit creative reuse center and community art space where donated materials get a second life, creativity is accessible to more people, and people have a place to gather, make things, learn, and connect.

And somehow, that little idea is very quickly becoming a real thing. 💛

We can’t wait to tell you more.

Collage fans: this one is for you! This morning, I purchased the most amazing collection of vintage Hollywood ephemera at an estate sale with the fabulous Arcadian Vintage! 😍 Hundreds (seriously, HUNDREDS!) of pages from someone’s 1940s scrapbooking hobby—movie stars, magazine pages, pin-ups, photos, and hand-cut collages.

I’ve been having so much fun going through it all, and some of it will be making its way into the Creative Reuse section at Kaleidoscope PA.

I mean…can you imagine the collage possibilities?!? Should we have a vintage Hollywood themed class? Should I make vintage collage packets? I am so excited! 🤩

Yesterday was a powerful reminder of what community looks like in action.

More than 2,000 Ironman athletes traveled from across the country—and around the world—to take on one of the biggest challenges of their lives. As they made their way through Happy Valley, our Changemaker Collective Hype Tunnel showed them exactly what this community is made of.

What we witnessed wasn’t just cheering. It was encouragement when people were struggling. Energy when they were exhausted. Smiles when they needed them most. It was a community showing up for people it had never met.

At Changemaker Collective, we believe meaningful impact happens when people choose to participate. Yesterday, dozens of volunteers gave their time, brought their families, made signs, rang cowbells, cheered at the top of their lungs, and helped create an experience athletes will remember long after they leave Pennsylvania.

It was an honor to represent Happy Valley and share the spirit of this community with visitors from all over the world.

To every volunteer, supporter, organizer, and athlete: thank you. Yesterday was proof that when people choose to show up, extraordinary things happen.

This is what community looks like.

🎉 Kaleidoscope PA is coming to Lemont! 🎉

I’m excited to share that I’ve officially signed the lease for a physical space inside the Center for Wellbeing in Lemont, and Kaleidoscope PA will be opening this fall! ❤️

The new space will include a cozy workshop area for small creative gatherings as well as a retail space featuring thoughtfully curated art supplies, handmade goods, and creative treasures you won’t find elsewhere in town. I’m also looking forward to partnering with featured guest artists who will showcase their work and lead special workshops throughout the year.

If you’re one of my regular workshop attendees, don’t worry—this doesn’t mean I’m leaving behind the places we love! We’ll still be hosting workshops at local farms, wineries, coffee shops, and other beautiful community venues. Having a home base simply allows me to expand what Kaleidoscope PA can offer.

Because I still have my day job, retail hours will be pop-up style, but the vision is to create a welcoming space where creativity, wellness, and community come together.

There are lots of exciting things in the works, and I can’t wait to share more as we get closer to opening day. Thank you to everyone who has supported Kaleidoscope PA along the way—this dream is becoming a reality because of you.

Stay tuned for updates as we prepare to open this fall!

❤️❤️❤️

Over 100 Penn State staff members creating neurographic art together at the same time — what an incredible experience. 💙✨

As part of Penn State Human Resources’ ERG (Employee Resource Group) Summit, I had the opportunity to lead a Creative Wellness Workshop focused on the connection between art, mindfulness, and mental well-being. Together, we explored how simple creative practices can help reduce stress, encourage presence, and create moments of joy and connection.

One of the most powerful moments was looking around the room and seeing over 100 completely different pieces emerge from the same activity — each one unique, expressive, and beautiful in its own way. It was such a meaningful reminder that creativity is deeply human and that art is not about perfection; it’s about process, expression, and connection.

Thank you to Penn State Human Resources and the ERG Summit organizers for creating space for conversations around wellness, creativity, and community. 🎨

This week, I’ll be speaking at a human resources conference at Penn State on creative wellness.

As part of the experience, I created a large-scale piece of neurographic art that conference participants will help complete together, section by section, person by person.

I love the symbolism behind this. Individually, each person contributes their own lines, colors, patterns, and creativity. But collectively, those individual pieces become part of something much larger and more connected.

There is growing research showing that art-making can support mental health by reducing stress, calming the nervous system, encouraging mindfulness, and creating opportunities for self-expression. But there is also something uniquely powerful about creating in community. When we create alongside others, we build connection, belonging, and shared experience — all things that are incredibly important for our well-being, especially in a world that can often feel isolating and overwhelming.

I’m excited to see this artwork evolve throughout the conference and to witness how creativity can bring people together in meaningful ways. 💙

There is something so special about watching people connect with creativity in their own unique way.

At our Paint Your Plant watercolor workshop at Smith + Front in Bellefonte, each person hand-selected a plant to take home and then created a watercolor painting inspired by it.

I loved seeing how differently everyone interpreted their plants — from bold colors and loose brushstrokes to delicate details and soft washes. Every piece reflected the personality and creativity of the artist behind it.

A huge thank you to Staci for being such an incredible host and for creating such a warm and welcoming space for our community to gather and create together!
