I recently wrote the exhibition text for the group show ‘Longspring’ at ZÉRUÌ. The show brings together works by Italian master Luigi Zuccheri, as well as Sara Knowland and Andrei Pokrovskii. It runs until October 3; link in bio to read the full text and see the install.

“…Sara Knowland’s works provide for some disruption to the visual language of the exhibition. In her practice she examines patriarchal social structures and historical visual cultures, for example through the imagery of witch hunts, moments in which femininity was suppressed, pinned down and declared a threat. In her recent works she temporarily suspends this focus, shifting instead to imagery which infers the masculine. The paintings presented here show close-ups of turkeys, symbols long linked to seasonal feasts and harvest abundance. Their grotesque, fleshy snoods,
rendered in vigorous brushstrokes, appear at once phallic and unsettling. Materially and formally, Knowland pays attention to the surface tension of her paintings, in which no single element dominates another This creates a kaleidoscopic visual language that does not strive for an unambiguous interpretation, but rather allows viewers to oscillate between revulsion and fascination, and the raw and the refined.”

The Artist Room presents Nature Morte, a group exhibition curated by Pieter-Jan De Paepe examining the painted still life. The exhibition features Leah Ke Yi Zheng, Owen Westberg, Max Xeno Karnig, Peter Davies, Henry Curchod, Kenneth Winterschladen, Sara Knowland, David Flaugher, Andrew Cranston and Alice Frey. Though each work varies greatly in its technique and approach, each artist is unified through an intimate, individual study of their own everyday reality.

The exhibition will open with a private view on 12 February, 6–8pm, and run until 14 March.

This 2024 took us down paths where we explored the limits of new ideas, learned a lot and forged strong new bonds between our artists with collectors and institutions.

From challenging exhibitions to daring collaborations in and beyond the gallery, we’ve navigated a year full of exploration and transformation at General Expenses.

To our artists who push limits, our collectors who believe in the vision, and everyone who stepped into the gallery this year—thank you. Your presence and engagement make this journey worthwhile.

As 2025 approaches, we’re ready to dive deeper, question more, and continue pushing forward.
