I’m at Making Moves Market at Abbotsford Convent, and this is not your typical Melbourne market.

Australia Post and Broadsheet have brought together 50 Australian small businesses.

Think fashion, jewellery, skincare, ceramics, homewares, food and lifestyle, all under one roof.

I’m not just walking past another anonymous retail display.

I’m meeting the people behind the brands - the founders, makers, creatives and entrepreneurs who have literally built something from scratch.

I’m spotting brands like Haus of Dizzy, Miou Matcha, Roasting Warehouse, Golden Groves, Principal The Label, Bippi, Yolkeye Ceramics and With Harper Lu.

Then there’s free coffee, food trucks, live music and a whole lot of Melbourne creative energy.

For me, that’s the difference.

It feels less like shopping and more like discovering the next brandI'm going to tell my friends about.

It’s an exciting time to be a maker in Melbourne. On Sunday September 20, 50 of the city’s emerging independent creatives are heading to Abbotsford Convent for Making Moves, a one-day community market presented by Australia Post and powered by Broadsheet.

Entry is free, and the line-up spans local fashion, homewares, ceramics, skincare, pet goods, food and more.

Ahead of the event, we caught up with seven of the makers to talk about finding inspiration, their big breakthroughs, and the favourite pieces they’re bringing along on the day.
