In the early 1900s, cats were essential for keeping the Commission Row fruits and veggies safe from river rats. Today, the cat in Portal to the Past also gives a nod to our artist’s alma mater; Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design’s mascot is the river rat!

The fun part? @johnkowalczyk took inspiration from a real-life cat currently living right inside Commission House. And word is… she’s feeling pretty smitten with herself right now. 💅✨

From historic mouser to towering masterpiece, Miss Kitty is keeping watch over the Third Ward with the right amount of attitude. She’s quickly becoming our favorite 20-foot feline!

🍉Why Watermelons? Welcome to old-school Milwaukee.

Back in the early 1900s, Commission Row (now the Historic Third Ward) was the city’s bustling wholesale produce hub. Rain, shine, or blizzard, the trade never stopped.

Merchants would unload massive shipments of bright summer melons straight from horse-drawn wagons onto open-air wooden docks. The result?

An iconic local visual: vibrant pink and green watermelons piled high against heavy Wisconsin snowbanks. 🍉❄️

Meet the DREAM TEAM ~ First up Sara Bott!!

@sarobott and @johnkowalczyk met when they both attended MIAD (Milwaukee School of Art and Design) and became life-long friends. They’ve been making art ever since. 🎨

So of course for a mural of this size (15,000 square feet!!) he brought Sara in to work on this project with him.

“Sara is an insanely talented artist in her own right,” says John, “she brings so much joy, passion, thought, and organization to everything she works on and it’s impossible not to be in the best mood working with her; she is a ray of sunshine!” ☀️

Sara assisted Josephine Rice on her mural “Full Circle” next to the Public Market on the underpass. 🌺

She has her finger on the pulse of the EDM music scene often designing stickers and merch for musicians like Pretty Lights. 🤩

She showed her miniatures at VAR Gallery’s 30x30 show more than once and works as a professional organizer with Neat Method.

Sara has two cats she considers her “world.” Her cats affectionately ~ Crash & Bara 🐈 (Crash Bandicoot and Kookaburra), a brother and sister duo, just turned 13. I bet they’d approve of Miss Kitty’s inclusion in “Portal to the Past.” 📷 @erichalvie 📷 @sarobott
