The River as Archive
I dream of the salmon returning and crowds on the bank and the bridge at Black Weir eager to see them leap. I dream of clean water returning and swimmers and paddlers, rowers and divers, babies and elders all in the river together. I dream of old new stories that tell us we all belong , that we are the river and the river is us. I dream of community gatherings and festivals to honour and celebrate our river, our Taff.
Thanks to our Writer in Residence for the Taff @sarwarskuse

The River As Archive 🌊 @sarwarskuse brought us all together for this beautiful celebration of the Afon Taf last weekend and what a wonderful afternoon it was.

Storytelling, ecology, river blessings, poetry, and the coming together of people who all love this incredible river. It was a lovely Sunday.

🙏🏼 Thankful to have been given the opportunity to perform a river blessing for the Afon Taf with this collective of human beings. It was an honour to share the power of the voice with the river and so many people who love this river as much as I do.

🌀 Big love to The River Taff Collective as always. I'm so grateful to have met you all this year and become a unit who care for and celebrate the Taff together @sarwarskuse @cathwords @alexg_wildlife

The River as Archive by @sarwarskuse

The Rights of the Taff, the rights of rivers.

I was watching for a Kingfisher to grace the ceremony, it duly did, apt synchronicity 💚

This week saw the launch of a new online Perspective(s) toolkit, sharing learning, experiences and reflections from the work so far. It takes an honest look at the successes and challenges, in the hope that others doing similar work can learn from these experiences and build on them.

Perspective(s) has brought creative professionals from culturally and ethnically diverse backgrounds together with museums and galleries across Wales, exploring national collections, uncovering stories and opening up new ways of looking at our history and culture.

Daniel Trivedy, Sioned Hughes, Nasir Adam and Sadia Pineda Hameed share some of these learnings and reflections, and explore how the experiences of Perspective(s) can help inform future work and projects.

Click the link in our bio to discover more about Perspective(s) and explore the toolkit 🔗

Purple Zone was honoured to welcome a special guest to our Summer Camp — Dr Nasia Sarwar-Scuse, writer, artist and creative facilitator, who delivered a truly inspiring creative writing workshop ahead of her special event, River As Archives, on 4th October.

Our young people were deeply focused on their writing, dreaming of the beautiful landscapes we all saw on our postcards and finding the words flowing straight from their hearts. 💜💜💜🥰

Thank you so much, Nasia, for taking the time to visit us and share your work with our young people. 🤗

A huge thank you to our partner, @WGCulture Fusion Funding, for supporting Purple Zone with funding that enabled us to purchase bus tickets for our participants to attend the activities, and to Cardiff Bus for another generous discount. We couldn't have made it without you! 💜

And, of course, a huge thank you to @tnlcommunityfund for making this possible, thanks to #NationalLottery players! 🎟️💜

💦 Taff Love Fest 27/06.

What a lovely warm day celebrating the Afon Taf with these amazing souls 🖤 we got together in the Taff Talks segment of the day festival to tell stories, talk about the ecology and bring some spirituality to the day.

I was lucky enough to be able to share some tidbits about the folklore of the Afon Taf and share the stage with some other lovely members of the Taff Crew I've been fortunate enough to have been connected with over the last few weeks. Our shared love for the Taff has brought us together and it's been such a blessing! I was honoured to share the stage and spend the afternoon with you guys and can't wait to see what we all do next! 🌀

Artist Talk! This week - 17th of April - the East End Arts Action Group and friends will gather again at @sapphos_plymouth as part of There is no new water programme with Owen to be in conversation with Dr Bram Arnold and Dr Nasia Sarwar-Skuse at Saphos Community Cafe - followed by a creative response workshop. 6pm all welcome and free! @take_a_part_uk

Ocean as mirror: a site of memory, a barometer for planetary health, a site of trauma, fiction, colonialism, and a tool to read our future in…

Dr. Bram Thomas Arnold is an artist who started with walking and kept going into performance, drawing, installation, writing and academia: he is currently a Lecturer in Fine Art at Falmouth University, an artist who spends half his time pretending to be an academic and an academic who spends half his time pretending to be an artist. He has recently published writing with Landscape Research Journal, produced research for Cambridge University's Centre for the Study of Existential Risk and is co-editing a forthcoming volume for Palgrave Macmillan called Sound and the Elements.

Dr Nasia Sarwar-Skuse is an award-winning writer and artist whose practice explores
questions of place, culture, community, politics, and justice through a decolonial lens.
Working across installation, film, and text-based media, she merges non-fiction, poetry,
academic research, and visual art to interrogate inherited narratives and create counter-
histories. Her work frequently engages with archives and museums as spaces of power, sites
where she reconfigures dominant histories and recovers suppressed voices.

Nasia holds a PhD in Creative and Critical Writing that investigates colonialism, Partition, migration, and their intersections with memory. Winner of the Queen Mary (Wasafiri) Writing Prize 2023 and Co-Editor of Gathering:Women of Colour on Nature (404 Ink), Nasia’s work has appeared widely in print and digital publications and is working on her first non-fiction book.
