The Set-Up Girl is the debut YA novel from Aussie author Sasha Vey and it’s a fabulously fun and romantic coming of age story which I buddy read with @indoor.g1rl

Amalia and Mae are best friends who do everything together. They both have strict parents who are usually happy to make exceptions for the two of them to hang out together, but when Mae decides she’s ready to date, Amalia’s comfy existence is challenged. As a loyal friend, her duty to Mae wins out and she agrees to help set her up with the hottest boy at school, Kasun. The only problem is that Amalia also has a secret crush on him. Can she navigate this new and unfamiliar world of parties and romantic drama and still keep her best friend?

What a wonderfully heartwarming and realistic read. I loved every character in this book and every challenge they faced felt very relatable. High school can be such a minefield of relationship woes and working out who you are and what you want and Sasha has captured these confusing emotions perfectly on the page. The communication, or lack of, also felt exactly right, remembering how difficult it was to just say what you thought, or what you wanted for fear of being ostracised or shamed. I completely understood Amalia’s reluctance to tell Mae that she too had feelings for Kasun, although this obviously would have led to a much easier resolution. I was also thrilled that Sasha explored both straight and queer relationships and that everyone was completely accepting of this diversity. It made for such a fresh and uplifting read.

Another gorgeous day at the Canberra Writers Festival 🧡 I split my day between the National Library of Australia and the National Museum of Australia, and attended sessions on love and family and rage and poetry, fantasy worlds and teen romance and friendship.
I can't thank @putnisandra and the team at @cbrwritersfest enough for the incredible program this year - my bookish heart could honestly explode it's so full after the past few days of events and catch ups. 🧡

Heart is full, hotel bed is delightfully comfy, PJs are imminent and laksa is on the way. Thanks to @cbrwritersfest and @putnisandra for an incredible weekend - it’s been a dream from start to finish. Special shoutout to all the legends who came along today too! It was brilliant to see so many teens in the audience (for many it was their first-ever writers’ festival), as well as feeling the love from some of my favourite people from various eras of my life, you know who you are!
