$My gorgeous friend @maria_youme came to me wanting a tattoo built around the Kintsugi technique — the ancient Japanese art where broken pottery is repaired with lacquer mixed with gold. She felt drawn to it because Kintsugi doesn’t try to hide the cracks; it honors them, turning every fracture into something precious. Just like her journey, it speaks of resilience, healing, and learning to embrace every imperfection that shaped who she is today. For the base of the design, I reached back to something that had stayed with me for years — a Cretan pottery motif I photographed at a museum in Heraklion when I was guest-spotting there three years ago. It felt like the perfect foundation for her piece: a direct link to her island, her culture, her roots. From that base, I let the golden Kintsugi lines flow into olive branches and the Cretan narcissus — the tiny, rare flower that grows only in rocky, hidden, moist places. Delicate yet incredibly strong, blooming straight from stone. I chose these flowers to mirror both Crete and Maria’s own path: beauty rising from hard ground, and strength rooted deeply in where she comes from.
