Thank you God.

6 months ago I decided to get up and change my life around. First step was making a goal, and that goal was running the Wilmington Marathon in under 3:30. It took time, discipline, lots of sweat and tears, and overall it took lots of humility. I never wanted to become comfortable or feel like I knew I could beat my goal time with a lack of training. Every run had to matter.

In early January, I went through a calf injury that kept me out of a portion of my peak weeks of training. It was so frustrating because I had been at a fitness level that would’ve allowed me to kill my goal. Even last night, I was journaling about pre-race feelings with the intent of posting it on here, but everything I wrote down was negative - “I don’t think it’s attainable anymore”, “I’m going for around 3:40 instead”.

This morning, all of that went out the window. Despite the calf issues I had been dealing with for over a month and even during the race, I also knew I had worked too long and hard to be thinking of myself as incapable all of a sudden. They say trust your training, so I trusted what I DID have down rather than what I didn’t get to show.

This was my first (and hopefully not my last) marathon. I ran a 3:25, achieved my first goal set out, had an amazing support group, and am already thinking of what’s next. To think I contemplated dropping this in January is laughable now. You will face obstacles. Not every training “plan” goes to plan - that’s something I will take with me in the future.

If you want to change your life around, or just do something crazy like go from couch to marathon - set goals, be disciplined, and watch your hard work become something greater.
