our rollerskating glitter baby EP ‘what if nobody kisses me?’ is 2 years old today 🥹💖🛼

i have such a soft spot for her… she was bold-loud-messy-hungry and pieced together by my village, my eyebags, and a dream. but most importantly, y’all were there!!! rollerskating and jumping and singing and crying!!! that concert still goes down as one of the best nights of my life, and i will simply never shut up about her!

i write this now, 2 years later, still fond of her, but not so much all the little quirks that being a freelancer and indie artist entails… but would i do it all over again? a million times yes :)

it was so much fun but truly such a rough period for my finances!!! never wished harder to be a nepo baby but we got out of there eventually :)

i love my friends. they are my family here in sg and words cannot express the joy i feel when i make music and art with them!!!

i am so so so lucky and this is my favourite thing in the world to do!!!!!!! oh my god

moments before we found an electronic pump in the store room btw…

these big heart balloons were like 5 feet tall

it was rly cool to be able to prove to myself that i could show up and be consistent and root for myself! i also learned how to edit quickly and in a way that keeps audience retention because of this campaign :)

if you’re organising a show u rly have to have so much self control in order to not spiral and stress about ticket sales…

im grateful im in a better place now, but back then it was either i sold out the whole show or i can’t pay rent lawl! what a crazy way to light a fire under ur ass (it worked though)

everyone was so gorgiana grande that night…

and we crowned this cutie pie as our best dressed!!!

planned the whole release + concert for 7 months including shoots, rehearsals, making mixed media assets, working out how to put a stage with tech into a skating rink, etc. by the time i released the ep and did press for it, i was burnt out 😭

no manager no team just a feller with amazingly talented friends who believed in the project

As a theatre kid, I was surprised to learn there’s literally a ‘Theatre Street’ in Singapore.

'Hei Yuen Kai’ in Cantonese or ‘Hi Hng Lor’ in Hokkien, is named after ‘Lai Chun Yuen’, a famous Chinese theatre that opened in 1887.

The theatre in Chinatown gone now, but what’s left is a small heritage gallery trying to capture the history of Chinese music in Singapore. From wayang to getai, I loved seeing how something as intangible as sonic culture materialised in an immersive, site-specific space.

These performances are such an important grassroot snapshot of cultural identity, yet they also make you pause and wonder: why did these art forms fade in the first place?

For me, it's defo out of pure spite. I once had to learn Chinese opera for my Traditional Asian Theatre class where we did the choreography for ‘Wang Kui’s Betrayal of Guiying’. I was SO bad at playing a vengeful ghost that 老师 kicked me to the naughty corner of the black box hence I never learnt the form 😔💔👻

Mayle and Ying En didn’t start Say Chunkie thinking they’d build a community, but that’s exactly what happened. From schoolmates who once thought they’d never be close, to creative co-owners sharing this journey together, their story has come full circle.

Over the years, they’ve watched customers return for life’s milestones: from engagements to pregnancies to bringing their children back for photos. They’ve seen shy grandparents warm up to silly props and laughter. For them, the real joy isn’t just the sets they build, but the memories, connections, and confidence they help people discover in front of the camera.

At Say Chunkie Studios, imagination starts with the most ordinary things — a table, a chair, even a bathtub. From there, Brendan and Ying En build worlds out of cardboard and layers of paper-mâché, piece by piece, by hand.

From a dolphin named HaitunZXC to a pigeon called Patrick, a giant clown head, and even a prawn with a Christmas bauble for an eye, their props are delightfully whimsical and proudly handmade. There’s a certain childhood charm in their process; feeling every strip of paper as it comes together, proof that the magic is in the making.

Meet Mayle and Ying En, the founders of Say Chunkie Studios — a bespoke photo booth experience built entirely by hand. What started as a random idea between partners became a creative playground inspired by 1980s photo booths and vintage posters of kids sitting on giant fish.

In a world of digital prints and AI art, they choose paint rollers on bamboo poles, hand-painted backdrops, and props made from scratch. For them, it’s important that every set feels human, tactile, and a little bit unhinged — a space where their wild ideas can come to life, exactly as imagined.
