khalas fest 2026

the first ever khalas fest happened a few weeks ago. a performance line up Oct. 1, 2, 3 featuring artists from across the country who contemplate questions of Palestine in their work through subversive, sharp, world-building visions and world destroying critiques / chaos. a curation of works that demand to be side-by-side. disrupting any notions of polite-ness. rupturing illusions of power / empire / settler colonialism through dark comedy and twisted strategies. where words lose their meaning, and embodied spells carve out prayers into a dark abyss.

Body Watani Dance project is always looking for ways to speak about Palestine in performance, to bring Palestine into every room, but this is the first time we have put together a festival of multidisciplinary performance makers working with dance, music, theater, performance art, comedy, and whatever is needed to say what needs to be said.

Honoring the first ever, khalas fest lineup.

ZAQUIA LUISA SALINAS ((+ Sergio & Guillermo))
FARGO NISSIM TBAKHI
LEILA AWADALLAH
METTE LOULOU VON KOHL
NOELLE AWADALLAH
ANNIESSA ANTAR
NICOLE BINDLER ((+ Chelsea))
TAREK ABDELQADER

What happened in these nights at @red_eye_theater in Minneapolis felt like a deep dive into the many ways [we] have been contemplating catastrophe across the country, over the last few years. Performance makers that have spent their lives dedicated to Palestine, falling ferosciously into pathways towards performance that is of these times - with unwavering commitment to disrupt, and to embody KHALAS. Enough. of this world. khalas. take note, who is silent, who perpetuates, who is neutral. khalas. it all must end. it’s time for the next world.

Here are some favorite images from our fave @gaddisonvisuals

This festival did not receive much funding, but we made it happen because we wanted it to happen. Because all the artists and crew said yes - we will show up. Because our audiences and community came for the ride, trusting the work and ready to be challenged and to continue decolonizing our cells together.

The support we did receive:
Gratitude to @menatheatermakers and the Well-Being in the Arts: NAP Fund, and some MSAB funds!

Every1 Starts from Point 1 / Caged / Portrait of a Manic Pixie Dreamgirl
Sun, Sep 06 | 6:30 & 8:30

Every1 starts from Point 1 emerges from a simple but persistent question: What does it mean to begin? In this work, it’s both a literal and symbolic origin—a place where all bodies share the same starting ground before splintering into their own realities.
@sbarrientos @gmo.c

Caged follows the wide range of reactive states that humans pass through while existing as captives of their own mind. Like caged animals, we stagger through an internal minefield, tumbling between blissful unawareness, panicked awareness that results in feeling frozen or reacting explosively, and the urge to return to captivity even when given the tools to escape because our coping mechanisms prove to feel safer than the sensation of freedom.
@emilyjh_

Growing up with Bipolar 1 in the early 2000s was an interesting time. Portrait of a Manic Pixie Dreamgirl is an exploration of my mental health, or lack thereof, and how perception can differ wildly from reality.
