If you've had an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, the technology that delivered it traces back to a lab at UBC. 💉

Dr. Pieter Cullis and his collaborators pioneered the lipid nanoparticle (LNP) delivery systems that made mRNA vaccines possible, and today, the lab is developing RNA-LNP vaccine formulations custom-designed to protect against a range of viral and bacterial pathogens. Cullis' entrepreneurial drive has helped launch more than a dozen #UBC spin-off companies and helped seed a life sciences ecosystem across BC that now includes more than 2,000 companies employing over 20,000 people.

On November 5, learn about Dr. Cullis' work and speak with many more of UBC's life sciences leaders at 𝗨𝗕𝗖 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆: 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁, part of Life Sciences BC (@lifesciences_bc)'s Investment Week. Hear directly from select researchers about emerging discoveries, technologies, and commercialization opportunities.

On the agenda:

→ Innovation & Industry Breakfast with UBC leadership, faculty, and researchers
→ Small-group lab tours across UBC's Point Grey campus

What a wonderful plant-based community mash-up we experienced on Saturday at the Fabric of Campus Fibre Garden, FLEET Mobile Studio, and School for Biomedical Engineering at UBC! Following a spirited talk by Zoe Kompst about dyeing with plants, the student demonstration stations for isolating and 3D printing with biomaterials, and for turning flax plants into woven linen fabric were full all day.

Thanks to Gabrielle Lam of SBME for the initiative, and the support of UBC’s Art History, Visual Art & Theory department. I hope it’s the start of more art-engineering collabs.

Thanks for the feature in the latest UBC Faculty of Medicine Pathways Magazine, featuring STITCH and Noah Stewart - one of 5 STITCH Biomedical Engineers 🙏

The University of British Columbia, where our team met (@sbme_ubc), was there from Day 1️⃣ so this spotlight is particularly meaningful for us.

We are so grateful for all of STITCH’s global partners through the years. We would not be where we are today without everyone’s generous support including: sage advice, opening doors through contacts + connections, saying our name in rooms full of opportunity, giving us a seat at the table, believing in our mission, dreaming big with us, and tangibly supporting us with skills + resources.

It truly takes a village to bring an innovation to those who need it most, locally + globally. In STITCH’s case, this village - much like postpartum hemorrhage 🩸- just happens to transcend borders 🌐

What if we could use the immune system’s own regulatory cells to stop harmful immune responses?

At this public event, Megan Levings will explore the science behind regulating human immunity and the potential of regulatory T cells (Tregs) as a cellular therapy.

During her postdoctoral training in immune regulation, Dr. Levings conducted pioneering work to define what we now know as regulatory T cells (Tregs) and showed their potential to be isolated and expanded for use as cellular therapy to stop harmful immune responses.

Today, her lab continues to advance research into Tregs, most recently using gene editing to re-direct cell specificity and enhance their function.

✨ Meet Emily Boyle, a @SBME_UBC student using engineering as her pathway to medicine.

Emily's #UBCEngineering journey has been one of discovery. She was accepted into the Pre-Biomedical Engineering (PBME) stream, explored biomaterials, drug delivery, and cellular bioengineering, and co-leads Engi-YOU, a club promoting health and well-being for engineers.

Her best advice? "If you're considering engineering and want to challenge yourself, go for it. Don't be intimidated. Engineering is a powerful degree that opens up so many options."

Want to learn more about Emily's story? Reply to this post with a 👋 and we'll send you the link! Emily Boyle Clean Image

Ask Dr. Karen Cheung what her lab is building, and she starts with a longstanding gap in women's health.

💬 "𝘋𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘱𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦, 𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘭𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘴 𝘰𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘥𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘢𝘺. 𝘠𝘦𝘵, 𝘢 𝘸𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘯 𝘢 𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘦 𝘣𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵, 𝘢 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘢 𝘱𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘥𝘺𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘤 𝘣𝘪𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘺 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘢 𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘬 𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳."

Her team at @eceubc and @sbme_ubc is developing a new class of Canadian-made technology that shrinks an entire diagnostic laboratory onto a biosensor chip. Small enough for a clinic, a field backpack, or a drawer at home.

The novelty isn't just in shrinking the instrument, but also in reducing production costs. Mass production, like the Bluetooth chip in a phone that costs a couple of cents, makes a chip cheap in a way a delicate benchtop instrument can never be. By changing the chemistry on the surface of these chips, entirely different biomarkers can be tracked: from hormones, to brain-injury markers. The engineering underneath stays the same; only the top layer is retuned.

This work brings together Dr. Karen Cheung and her team, Dr. Govind Kaigala, Dr. Sudip Shekhar, and Dr. Lukas Chrostowski (co-founders of Dream Photonics Inc.), with research contributions from Dr. Cheryl Wellington on neurological biomarkers. In February 2026, the project secured over $7.1 million from Pacific Economic Development Canada to push the platform toward field-deployable, dual-use applications.

This is what sponsored research looks like when it's working: a partnership with the funding and momentum to carry an idea from the bench toward the clinic and the field.
