Harvest is one of the most exciting times of the year in wine country, but picking the grapes is only the beginning.

At Beckmen Vineyard, the journey from vine to bottle starts in the vineyard. 🍇

🌱 Biodynamic farming focuses on building healthy soil, caring for the entire vineyard ecosystem, and working with the natural cycles of the land.

🍇 Harvest — Grapes are carefully picked when they reach the desired balance of ripeness, acidity, and flavor.

🏭 Crush & production — The grapes make their way into the winery, where they are processed and prepared for fermentation.

🧪 Fermentation — Yeast converts the natural sugars in the grapes into alcohol, transforming grape juice into wine.

🪵 Aging — Depending on the wine, it may spend time in tanks or barrels, developing additional character, texture, and complexity.

🍷 Bottling — Eventually, all that work in the vineyard and winery comes together in the bottle.

As someone with a background in agriculture, I love seeing the connection between soil, plants, science, farming, and ultimately the food and beverages we enjoy.

This is more than just wine — it’s agriculture from grape to glass. 🌱🍇🍷

La Cuadrilla 2022

Today I’m traveling to California thanks to a wine with a beautiful story behind its name. Ruben Solorzano (@ruben_solorzano_ruelas_ ), the vineyard manager, gave a vineyard block (Cuadra) to the workers so they could take responsibility for their land, thus becoming farmers. When Tom Stolpman (@stolpmanvineyards) learned of this initiative, he decided that all the wine produced in the “cuadra” would be given to its members (“cuadrilla”) for their own consumption. And since 2009, they’ve also been sharing profits with the crew members, both as a year-end bonus and weekly, added to their wages.

Served in a glass, aromas of lavender and lilac immediately appear, along with notes of fresh red fruit and hints of pepper. On the palate, it presents soft, fine tannins, with a medium body and a dry, slightly fruity finish. A wine I enjoyed so much that I’m already asking my friend Quim Estapé (@catandobarcelona) at Vila Viniteca (@vilaviniteca) for the next vintage.

I’ll conclude by mentioning its beautiful label, whose design changes every year by creative director Kari Crist (@karicrist). In 2022 it was named The Mother Vine, in honor of a pre-clonal cutting planted in 2013 and which, 10 years later, already has 1000 interconnected vine heads.
