Camp O:Shad — All Walls Will Fall

Camp O:Shad has ended, but what happened here will live far beyond the camp itself. Named for O:Shad, the jaguar who appeared in Arizona in 2023. O:Shad means “jaguar protector.” To the Tohono O’odham, jaguars are protectors of the people & the environment. For more than 75 DAYS, people on both sides of the Arizona–Mexico border stood together in a historic binational tree sit that halted border wall construction. We delayed construction, forced contractors and the government to spend enormous resources on security, equipment, and lost productivity, and brought international attention to what was happening on the border. For them, this is about money. For us, this is about life.

Camp O:Shad may be gone, but the blood, sweat, tears, courage, love, and resistance poured into the land have not gone to waste.

🌳 The first binational tree sit to halt border wall construction.
🌳 The Abuela Tree on the Mexican side still stands after relentless pressure and a land defender spending 20+ hours suspended in a harness without food or water after Border Patrol cut away her platform.
🌳 Pressure from land defenders helped secure a road to the cemetery.
🌳 Millions and millions of people witnessed what was happening at the border through social media advocacy.
🌳 Cuttings from the Grandmothers are growing in a nursery soon to be returned to the earth.
🌳 A powerful community and support network emerged, ready for whatever comes next.
🌳 Countless people experienced direct action for the first time, gaining skills and lessons through solidarity and community.

Although we didn’t achieve everything we fought for, history was made. Grandmother tree gave us so much and she lives within everyone who stood beneath her branches, defended her, and carried her story into the world. We will grow from her roots.

Thank you to everyone who showed up and fought for the Grandmothers. Thank you for fighting for life. Thank you for every drop of blood, sweat, and tears poured into this land. Camp O:Shad lives on in all of us ❤️

We just lost an irreplaceable part of our desert in Arizona.

Today in Lochiel, Arizona, the Grandmother Tree, the last of four ancient cottonwoods, was cut down by the United States Government for border wall construction. Video from the camp shows it happening.

Customs and Border Patrol claimed these four ancient cottonwoods needed removal for a double border wall, meaning they want to build a wall and another wall. They cut down three of these ancient cottonwoods on July 27. Since July 29, people had taken turns living in the last one to protect it.

Today, they forcefully removed those protecting the tree and violently cut it down.

This is an attack on our fragile desert ecosystems.

Cottonwood riparian habitat covers less than 1% of Arizona.

At least 80% of our wildlife is estimated to depend on riparian areas.

Dead and dying cottonwoods become homes for 40+ species, including owls and bats.

Fremont cottonwoods in Arizona can live 150-200 years. The Grandmother Tree was estimated at 200.

In a desert like ours, we know what a tree like this means.

Please pay attention to what this government is doing.
