The Springfield College Department of Athletics and the School of Physical Education, Performance and Sports Leadership have announced the hiring of Jeff Stern ‘20 as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach and Assistant Professor of Strength and Conditioning.

“I don’t have words yet and I won’t for a long time. It’s challenging to describe the gratitude I have for this place and most importantly the people that create the environment here,” said Stern. “As an undergrad at Springfield, I had many people in my life that helped me grow and find my way as a student-athlete and young professional. Now, some of those same people have given me the opportunity to come back and serve this incredible community.“

It’s hard to put into words a feeling that is almost indescribable; an experience that can only truly be understood by the person who lived it.
The only way I know how to describe this weekend is with three words:

💎Small Moments.
💎Defining Moments.
💎Impact.

Small moments of courage versus fear.

I’ve learned that those small moments when you decide to step outside of your comfort zone and choose courage can become defining moments in your life.

There has been a lot of work to get to the point of public speaking, and there is still plenty more to do. But I often think about how much I would have missed if I had allowed fear to dictate my life.
The conversations.
The interactions.
The stories.
The people I never would have met.
Those moments are worth the discomfort. Because discomfort doesn’t last forever. You only grow if you go.

Grateful I said yes to the invitation to speak at the NSCA conference at Springfield College.

You can’t make this stuff up.

To have my first public speaking experience take place where it all started for me in this profession brought back so many memories.
And then to speak alongside individuals whose books I’ve read, whose work I’ve studied, and whose contributions have helped shape this field, was a surreal moment.
And as if that wasn’t enough, I also got to visit Hudy and UConn.
More memories. More reflection. More gratitude.

A reminder to stay the course, stay curious, and explore all that life has to offer with open hands.

Maybe the goal isn’t just to have an impact on others. Maybe it’s also to remain open enough to allow other people to have an impact on you.
People are fascinating and this field is full of them.
Oh, how lucky I am to be surrounded by so many amazing, brilliant minds.

This weekend reminded me that sometimes the defining moments in life begin with something very small:

A decision to say yes.
A decision to walk into the room.
A decision to speak.
A decision to choose courage over fear.

Fantastic continuing education about refining athletes movement quality, cueing, exercise progressions, and training adjustments with stronger purpose and precision.

Coach Boyle, who works with many of our athletes, was also there and closed out the summit with a great lecture on “What is Functional Training?”
