Black Derby Collective Presents: Black Trackblazers

In 2007, Scarbie Doll #5150 began her derby career in Atlanta, Georgia before transferring to Angel City in 2009. Scarbie is most famously known for creating the Black Roller Derby Network (BRDN), a Facebook page started in 2011, whose membership is over 1,200 worldwide.

The BRDN has given Black derby participants, from skaters, officials, photographers, & announcers, a place to connect & seek refuge among one another, especially for skaters who are the only Black skaters on their teams. In 2008 Scarbie gathered 4 other Black skaters to take the first Family Photo. The longstanding tradition of the “Family Photo” is where Black people, skaters, officials, photographers, & sometimes fans, at an any roller derby event gather together to take a group photo.

In 2015, Scarbie produced the first all-Black game at Rollercon, Bitch Please vs Side Eye. This game preceded borderless teams & helped sparked a movement of racially marginalized diasporic skaters creating their own spaces for themselves.

Scarbie has remained active in the roller derby community through her retirement by announcing, attending tournaments, an admin for the BRDN, & advocating for Black skaters when they fear retaliation. Since hanging up her skates she has become a caregiver for her mother, continues to raise her son, wrote a book you can buy on Kindle, The Graveyards on Sunset: Outrageous Hotel Stories from the Third Shift. Applying her diplomatic & advocacy experience from roller derby, Scarbie became the Vice President of an African-American Parent Advisory Committee at her son’s school district; focusing on ensuring Black students were treated fairly, internal biases among teachers were addressed & curriculum was culturally acceptable. In 2021, she received an award from the school district for her contributions.

@scarbiedoll the Black derby community is indebted to you for letting us know we weren’t alone, creating literal space to bring us together from all over the world, and creating traditions we continue to this day. You’ve helped birth an entire movement of BIPOC skaters creating their own teams & spaces for themselves.

#latergram My heart is still smiling from the joy I felt skating at BIPOC Bowl in Denver.
I got the chance to skate and hang out with some of my favorite people!

Thank you @mackmaane and crew for creating a safe space for BIPOC skaters. It felt so good to be in an environment where I’m not accused of being too rough/aggressive/competitive/strong. I loved skating with and against some of the strongest derby skaters on earth! I got knocked on my ass a few times and it was awesome! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I can’t wait for the next BIPOC Bowl!!! #rollerderby
