Speaker spotlight🎤🪩

James Ackerman is a Dublin-based DJ, promoter and creative working across nightlife, music and cultural events. Growing up in Tallaght, his route into Dublin’s cultural and nightlife scene was shaped by the barriers that can come with living outside the city centre — from transport and cost to simply being removed from the spaces and networks where culture happens.

He spent five years working with Tengu, becoming closely involved in Dublin’s independent nightlife community, before developing SCARLET, his own event and creative platform. Through SCARLET, James has promoted events, worked with local and international artists, and developed installations and visual environments for clubs, cultural spaces and brands.

His perspective on cultural access comes from having experienced both sides of it: growing up feeling geographically and financially removed from much of Dublin’s cultural life, and later becoming someone actively involved in creating those spaces. His work is driven by an interest in how nightlife and independent culture can be made more accessible to young people regardless of where they come from or how much money they have.

Looking forward to seeing you all at our Access to Culture event!🪩🌹

When I step on stage, there’s no safety net. Every set is 100% improvised. Just a blank slate and an honest, real time conversation between me and the hardware, following wherever the sound takes us.

The full Sonic Explorations live set is now up on YouTube. Big 🖤 to everyone who showed up and shared the room with us.

Thank you for creating space for live events like this.

A new, purpose built, space to dance is the promise of new memories, and Dublin’s been waiting 17 years for something like that. In this piece, we spoke to 3 Dublin-based collectives dedicated to providing something new to dancers in a landscape where nightlife infrastructure has stagnated.

This week’s Mix Of The Week is a power hour of screaming, thundering live techno from Mav, recorded at Dublin’s Tengu for the Sonic Exploration club night.

This is a live set built for a packed Gashoulder: full-throttle from the opening seconds, overflowing with energy, and delivering exactly what Mav does best: beautiful, uncompromising carnage
