Dube, Soweto, Johannesburg.
Happy Freedom Day, South Africa!
The freedom to express and be yourself is one of the greatest things about this incredible country. But civil rights are still violated every day, especially by the private sector. Workers are treated as disposable. Public spaces are being privatised, and unconstitutional restrictions on access are increasingly normalised. The private security industry frequently uses unlawful detention, intimidation, and violence. Racial profiling is taken for granted. Pollution from mining, petrochemical and industrial companies continues to violate constitutional rights to health, dignity, and an environment not harmful to wellbeing. Corporations increasingly control or shape essential services in ways that deepen inequality and exclusion. There is a huge amount to celebrate 32 years after the end of apartheid. But too many people still don’t actually know what their rights are, while older systems of power are maintained—cleverly rebranded for a 2026 aesthetic. My optimism comes from seeing a new generation questioning them. Some will be seduced by the illusion of “success” and hover around the elite, picking up the crumbs that fall to the ground. Others will educate themselves about their rights, claim them, and fight for them. It’s a work in progress… But where would I prefer to be? Absolutely nowhere.
