God’s wonderful Handiwork

(Ecclesiastes 3:11)
“Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.”

As Halloween approaches and will be a special one, I thought I’d share this “Thriller” intro I had a chance to choreograph on some incredible dancing characters 💀😂 It was refreshing to create some David-original choreography inspired by the “undead” prior to performing the Michael Peter’s choreography.

This was a cast that was beyond me when taking horror direction! 🪦 My favorite is working with these types of artists who bring movement to life - so to speak. 😅

Emotions are instinctive. What we do with them is a choice.

We don’t get to choose what moves through us—the joy, anger, fear, grief, desire—but we do get to choose what we make of it. How we respond. What we hold onto. What we let go of.

Maybe the power isn’t in controlling what we feel, but in choosing what we value.

Life Imitates is an exploration of that space between feeling and choice—and all the ways it shapes who we become.

A few thoughts behind the work:

While researching Life Imitates, I became interested in how we define and categorize human emotion—and how those definitions can differ across cultures. I kept coming back to the emotions commonly described as primary: happiness, fear, surprise, sadness, disgust, and anger.

What struck me was how the majority of our primary emotions we perceive as “negative.”

But if these emotions are fundamental to being human, why are we so quick to label some of them as bad?

When we treat sadness, fear, anger, or disgust as something we shouldn’t feel, we encourage ourselves to avoid them rather than understand them. And I think there is something far more troublesome about denying parts of ourselves than allowing ourselves to fully experience them.

Of course, there is a difference between feeling an emotion and allowing it to control you. But if you are constantly wearing the mask of “I am just happy,” can you ever really know what happiness feels like?

Emotion exists through contrast. We understand one feeling because we have experienced another. We know light because we know heavy. We know what it feels like to come up for air because, for a moment, we knew what it was like to be without it.

So much of the human condition lives in these “negative” emotions—and maybe that’s exactly what makes the good feel so good.

Life Imitates is an exploration of that contrast and of emotions on a fundamental level. It is an exploration allowing ourselves to embody the whole being rather than only the parts we’ve decided are beautiful.

Life imitates art. And that is why art is a necessity.

Thank you @danceteacherweb for another incredible year! The energy in both of my classes was inspiring. We hit that jazz at 9:00 AM full out, no marking.

It was an honor to connect with so many wonderful educators. I hope you all left as inspired as I was. Special thanks to Angie and Steve for inviting me back to share my knowledge and passion. I am already looking forward to next year.

Shout out to my lovely assistants @bryleighdilello and @schang198 So grateful for the two of you!
