A $2 screen doesn’t need to look like an iPhone. Sam Beek makes the case for leaning into chunky pixels and simple monochrome graphics. Watching our tiny game run, I immediately thought of old Nokia phones. That look still has so much charm.

Writing code is only one part of getting a physical thing to work. You still need right components, wiring, and a way to upload and debug it. Sam explains where Schematik fits alongside tools like Cursor and Claude Code.

Getting back into hardware after years away has been fun. It has also meant getting excited about various components and spending hours with AI researching about how to procure them and what type of ideas to work on.

So I invited Samuel Beek, founder of Schematik, onto The Founder’s Foyer to build something with me. LIVE! And a hardware project for the first time!

We built a tiny playable game with about $8 in parts: an ESP32, a $2 screen, two buttons, and a breadboard.

Since Monday this has been my view, hours lost compiling and flashing trying to figure out why my camera unit and paper color no longer talk to each other.
All I can say is the rabbit hole is getting deeper.
@schematikio Ai coding works but for the uninitiated it takes you along on its own odyssey of sending messages back and forth between tech and itself, hopefully I will soon find my way out of this hole and return to the surface triumphant.

So since getting my @m5stack paper color I had been thinking about converting it in to a camera of sorts, I was beaten to it by @reframe.camera a really functional epaper camera, which involves a stack of components and soldering knowledge ( of which I have none).
At the same time @schematikio also released the build for an epaper camera that also utilised the m5 stack paper color as a viewing screen.
With all this knowledge I decided to embark on my own Odyssey of discovery, frustration and rabbit holes.
Having no coding experience I used Schematik an Ai powered tool. Put the right prompts in and hey presto (that’s how it should go) as I mentioned earlier I have found myself going down many rabbit holes.
So after hours many hours and a few days sat at the kitchen table I now have the most defamiliarised camera, a cross between a glitched, pixel camera. Colors don’t blend and photo quality is kind of poor but as can be seen from the attached photos there is a charm to the photos.
Working with something like this is slow as it takes some minutes to start up thus slowing down is important, no shooting off the hip, also like Polaroids it takes some time for the photos to arrive on screen.
.
I’m sure some refinements are needed like a better camera unit but really as a way of making art this camera suits the bill perfectly.
Now to take it out in to the world and see what happens
