Scheusal - Urwahn --- --- Info --- --- Release year: 2025 Label(s): Purity Through Fire, Worship Tapes Format(s): Cassette, CD Publishing date: August 21, 2025 Author(s): LV --- --- Article --- --- “Scheusal” is an eloquent German word for an ugly, brutal entity, something between monster, beast and notorious criminal. This Scheusa herel evokes the spirit of 'Urwahn'—a term that translates loosely to “primal madness”—and that’s precisely what this one-man German black/punk metal act delivers: barbaric, raw aggression with a distinctly unpolished edge. Released under the Purity Through Fire banner, Scheusal stands both apart from and alongside its labelmates. Think of Mavorim, for instance—similar in fury, but Scheusal trades melody for brute force. The production is deliberately coarse: rusty, rough, and raw. It’s the kind of sound that feels like it’s being booted straight into your freshly scrubbed asshole with steel-toed malice. That’s the promise, and Scheusal delivers. Across ten tracks, the music is stripped down and dir... Rosa picked up this box on the street. It was probably a carpenter’s nail box. Originally I had planned to use an insect specimen case to make two Candy Candy boxes. But Rosa and Sebastian suddenly went to Paris, so every day I peeked into the antique shop run by that stubborn old man. It was always closed. Maybe it had shut down. The insect box was 50€ for two, then it went down to 40, and he even offered with baseball cap embroidered “Polizei”. I regretted not buying it then but thanks to that, this piece came into being. I began a daily ritual: taking out and putting back various things junk I brought from Japan, trash I found on the street, and all sorts of other odds and ends. On my way to the gallery every day, there was beautiful grove, and in it sat a golden girl, quietly and still. A tiny bird perched on her shoulder. The grove was filled with finches singing their songs, yet she wore a deeply sorrowful expression. Each day, I picked flowers to offer to her and prayed for peace in the world. So it was inevitable that I would pack those feelings into this box. One day, when I was restlessly struggling to complete the checkerboard grid, I happened upon a newspaper clipping. My beloved Kiyoshi Oka. From Rosa’s land, Levi Strauss’s ‘Tristes Tropiques’ and from here in Germany, Jürgen Thorwald’s ‘The Dawn of Anatomy’. That old scrap of paper, from just over a decade after the war, found its place here and suddenly, the grid began to fill. A moment of silence on the 80th anniversary of the Hiroshima atomic bomb.
